Does the phrase "UV Mapping" cause your brain to seize up?

For some reason when the phrase "UV Mapping" comes up my brain interprets this as a "you don't understand this, time to click on another tab or maybe there's something good in the refrigerator" signal.

I suspect this has something to do with the "UV" sounding like it means Ultra Violet, which seems so incongruous in connection with texturing 3D forms that it suggests there must be something terrible and challenging involved, like quantum physics or calculus or something.

It's all magic. Courtesy of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UV_map:

UV coordinates represent the projection of the unit spacevector onto the xy-plane.

u = \sin\theta\cos\phi = \frac{x}{\sqrt{x^2+y^2+z^2}}

v = \sin\theta\sin\phi = \frac{y}{\sqrt{x^2+y^2+z^2}}

Oh, of course, now it all makes sense...not.

Download UV mapper. Import model and map.

Voila! UV mapping right in front of your eyes!

:D I said it was magic! (Even so, I could have at least cleaned up the formatting for the equations. :o ) The thing is, I think we all kinda know what UV mapping is, and the next level of detail is, well, math. The problem it addresses is how to project a 3D shape onto a 2D surface for texturing. We see this in SL avatars very explicitly: clothing and skin makers are really painting on a UV map "template" that represents--is a projection of--the 3D avatar on a flat surface. That defines what part of the texture appears where on the rendered avatar.

Calculus is easy. I still can't work out how you're supposed to be able to iron a fitted sheet...

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I have the solution to your problem: No-iron percale.

Ok, So now I have a picture of wrapping paper in my head. Wrapping a picture around a 3d object.
nm....im a bit....simple lol.

I chose to think of it more as taking a piece of fabric and molding it into a, well, mold of a human form. Kinda like those Barbie templates that used fabric instead of rubbings.

Either way, math this early in the day makes my brain long for hibernation. If anyone needs me, I'll be cursing at the build tools in SL ;)

I never did like messing with UV mapping and unwrapping either, and I've been doing 3d modeling since 1992.

For those that are confused, simply think of it like mentioned above, like wrapping paper. It's a 2d projection of the texture onto a 3d surface.

Like if you take a globe, and unfold it to an accurate 2d map...it's not going to be a continuous drawing, there will be jagged breaks in the image (as seen on atlases). This is the same thing UV Mapping has to do...when unwrapped or 'flattened' the 2d projection will be broken up in specific ways which best project onto the 3d surface accurately.

When you 'UV Unwrap' an object, it creates a 2d texture of the 3d surface. This way, you can paint or lay your textures onto the 2d surface in an accurate manner. However, for most people, it takes some getting used to, reading more complicated UV Unwraps. Good spacial relations helps.

In creating sculpties, and accurately baked textures, one is pretty much forced to learn about UV mapping and unwrapping.

I thought Qie's post was very helpful ... now I know what UV mapping is and why it's called that! *blush*

...there's way too much information to decode the UVW. You get used to it, though. Your brain does the translating. I don't even see the UV. All I see is blonde, brunette, redhead...
