i been playing SL over a year an i have never seen it hung up on "connecting to region". and if i click on anything else it goes black and says not responding???.... is this an SL thing or could there be something else wrong?

First, I'd try connecting to a different region from the login screen (may need to check Edit / Preferences / Show Start Location on Login Screen). If that doesn't work, I'd power-cycle all the network hardware from the ISP up to and including the client machine.
It could be an SL issue, but concurrency is over 66,000 right now, so a lot of folks seem to be getting in.

You IP provider swapped a bunch of you back to dial-up without telling you - they were hoping folks wouldn't notice.

~sim~ I encounter hangups on "connecting to region" occasionally. Most of the time, I hit cancel . . . and I find I'm at my teleport destination. I'm not sure what's going on here; but I am pretty sure it's an SL problem.

I keep getting stuck at "waiting for region handshake". I've tried two accounts, several different sims, over the course of an hour...it's very frustrating.
