Hi!! I am new to the whole templates, clothing textures scene, though I have been in SL for a few years now. I am looking for any advice on where to find good textures, such as fabrics, leather, things like this to make clothing. Any help would be great thanks to all who read this post.

Welcome to the Forums.

You may get some good responses in this forum, but the experts tend to hang out in Texturing Tips (); there may be some "sticky" threads at the top of the list in that forum that would be helpful, too.

Lathe of Eber has some decent ones and everything in there is free. (You will find the shop in search in your Second Life viewer.)

Textures you obtain within SL will have to be copied to your hard drive to use for making clothing. Two big things come to mind........first they must be full permissions.........second copying to your hard drive you will lose a lot of the quality and upon your re-uploading you will very likely be extremely dissappointed in the final product.

If you want to get textures for use to make clothing items in SL your best bet is to Google for free textures. You need to make sure that you can freely use the textures for what it is you are wanting to do with them. Things like you may be able to use them for your personal use (you cannot resell them......even in SL), you maybe be required to give full credit to the owner of the original texture, or you may find you cannot download at all unless you obtain full permission from the owner of the textures before hand. Lots of BS to muddle through.............well, if you want to remain legal that is.

Your best bet is to make your own using a good image editing program.......Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, GIMP, and a few other lesser known programs such as Paint.NET. Whatever program you use it will need to be able to handle multiple layers and alpha channels. That applies to textures you might download too. Since the better templates for clothing for SL are at 1024 by 1024 pixel resolution (or higher) your textures would probably need to made at that size.

And, I'll second the suggestion that maybe the better place to post this question would be in the Texture section of this forum.

Not necessarily. You can make some passable things with appearance edit mode, such as a simple dress or ballgown. And with the free prim skirt maker to make the fuller skirt.

I found it very hard to find good, decent resolution free textures online. And even if you do, everyone else has those same ones.

to the OP: Yes the texture forum is better, they can advise how to make your own textures for one, which is the ideal way to go. I recommend this website:

http://www.mermaiddiaries.com/2006/11/build.html

Maybe start with the 'quick tricks' types of tutorials on there. Like how to make your own silk fabric texture. It was easy and quick, and fun. If you learn as I do, then you like someone to get you started with some practical tips and then guide a bit as you go. Between that site and the texture forum you will be making your own textures in no time.

That would be prim clothing. Which in reality is building. Not a particularly good start to learning to make clothing for use in SL. But, yeah, you're right on that point.
