I have a slim avatar with a rather small head. I like the way she looks, but find she is smaller proportionally than most adult female avatars in SL, yet she is clearly NOT small enough go be a child avatar. She is clearly an adult woman. I have a hard time finding hair to fit without having to rearrange prims like crazy (Sirena's is the exception, her Small hair fits me great!), and skirts and belts are almost always too big and cannot always be resized small enough to fit me. I have tweaked my body settings once already to give her a more womanly figure, with a fuller waist and hips, but she is still rather thin. I would like to keep her look as much as possible, so I don't want to just buy a new avatar "off the rack." Are there some standard measurements that designers use for head size, and the various torso/waist/hips sliders? I'm looking for something to move me in the right direction, without totally distorting my avatar's look. Thanks for any input. You can email me directly at princess.ivory.sl@gmail.com if you don't want to post your avatar model info here in the forum.

There is no 'standard'. Most designers use one shape to design thir clothing on and it does firt best on a shape closest to that. Generally I actually design my clothing and accessories on two different shapes so that i can make sure it will easily size up and down to fit smaller and larger shapes (i use my own 'plus sized' shape an my partners petite shape) Your best bet it to try different plaes til you find ones which fit you easily ifyou are not good at editing. The other option is learn how to edit linked parts to adjust belts etc which cant be shrunk down s a linkset It takes some work but it is a good skill to have

I tend to do the same as Ecelectic does and test the item on different shapes to see how well it sizes up or down.
you may also want to make sure that the stuff you buy is set as modify (and not just modify with scripts) because sometimes you might need to adjust individual prims.
If you are not sure how to do that, there are plenty of threads in here that folks have mentioned it, or look for some basic classes to learn how.
Everyone should take one or two classed for the basics or take the time to learn that stuff on their own.

The only "standards" I'm aware of are size 0 for women's feet, and size 20 for hands (most prim nails are sized to fit that, although some give you a range, like 10/20/30).

Most hair is for head size 50.
I looove that Sirena has three sizes (and more than one shade of hair) per pack. I wish every designer would take a note from Natalia.

Another thing can be that it's easier to grab a belt that's bigger than to try and edit a belt where only a part of the buckle is visible. I am not so big myself (in SL I'm a bit over 6 feet, and that's average height) and I often find that prim parts are too big. I have a bit of body fat and small parts like jewellery are often buried in me. I've learned to switch to zero body fat, grab the piece and pull it out a bit, and then increase body fat again.
Not many new people would do that. Or change "attach to" hand instead of stomach, pull it out a bit and then attach to stomach again. It could lead to a lot of complaints from customers that don't know such tricks.
I just bought a set from INDI design. That was 3 sizes included, for both belt alone and belt + skirt. Their arm and leg straps were a bit too big, and came in just 1 size. It was interesting that all prim parts had resize script, even those in S, M and L. And that wasn't all. Unscripted prim parts that can be edited the usual way were included too! This is the future I think, offering flexibility.
For hair, try Japanese designers? Many of their avatars are very small. I know I always has to stretch :69: hair a bit so it can fit a size 50 head.

All the items I make for eventual sale are deliberately made way undersized. Combined with full mod perms, NObody will be saying this about my stuff
