Abandoning an Island?

I know you can abandon land on the main land.. but can you just abandon an island or do you have to sell it? I have looked repeatedly in the Knowledge base but it doesn't say anywhere> I need to close an island... but don't want to waste time trying to sell it. But there isn't an abandon land in the land options. Any idea?

I think you pretty much have to contact concierge support and tell them you want to return the island. It works differently to mainland.

Contact Concierge and tell them you want to abandon your island. Note that it will cease to exist utterly (not become Linden land as with abandoned mainland). You get nothing back so you would be better off just selling it to a land baron.

I'm sure you can file a Ticket, or just call the 800 number, and have Linden Lab terminate your private island. Billing happens up front, so you shouldn't be billed any more once you cancel your island.

You could transfer it to someone else for a price of zero dollars, and the system is set up so that they can pay the 100$US fee to Linden Lab directly. To transfer an island, both parties file a Ticket indicating what they want to happen (the name of the region, the price, and who will pay the fee).

I don't know if you can cancel an island from in-world, like the Abandon Land button for mainland. Another idea is to try removing your payment information on file, so that they can't bill you for it, but that seems like a flaky way to do it that could cause problems.

The transfer process works as described, as long as both parties correctly submit their tickets; the problem comes in due to time frames. The last time I was witness to this being done, it took approx 2 weeks to get to it, and what determined that time frame was how many were ahead of us. We sweated it out literally til 11:45pm PST on the last night before the old owner would have been charged again. So just make sure you have plenty time in front of you if you choose to do the transfer thing, before tier is due again, but other than that, it did work nicely, very smooth.

I've been hearing that transfers are happening in a day or two now.

i would not do that. LL will take it off your Us dollar balance leaving you in the red. You then get 1 week to get it back to 0 befor they will take action which will be a ban.

Do not return an island by removing your payment info and letting the account default. That can get the entire account locked up, and it's just not worth it. Sell it off to someone. Go into the For Sale By Owner group, send out an IM that you are selling it to the highest offer over $500 that you get in the next 10 minutes, and watch people fall over themselves trying to get to you.

I've been thinking about buying something; IM me in-world if you didn't sell it yet.

I see a lot of abandoned land I could've taken up, at least people would've gotten SOMEthing for it.

I want to do something that's for SL public as well as have myself a pretty house somewhere and space to build in. I'm not a flipper. I'm just trying to become more a part of SL.

ETA: I've sent the OP a note card just now. But seriously - if anyone is thinking of abandoning land, let me know. At least you'd get something for it and I'd finally get to own land in SL. The tiers are enough, I can't afford the kick-in price too.

I don't sell in SL, my main aim/long term goal is to make someplace residents can really enjoy. My role model is a place like Caledon...I'm not saying I can ever achieve that! I also would love to have a place artists can hang and share and create or build, etc. I dunno. :)

That's great, hope that is the case. In our case, they said it was because a lot of transactions were ahead of us, and we waited too late to submit our tickets, (2 weeks or so before the next tier payment was due) and so, hence the time issue). If they are doing it faster now, that's terrific, our situation was nearly a year ago.
