Does not matter what top i put on, i'm entirely black from
neck to navel to fingertips,

(could be worse, i spse, like bright neon pink/lime check).

If i put a coat on then my jeans turn black too.

I've logged 3 times now, last time i cleared my cache before closing and restarting sl.

I want my tops back, waa!

Any ideas?

I'm sorry I'm not inworld to look up exactly where it is - but in the Advanced menu is a command to Rebake Textures. Someone should post it here in a moment. Pretty sure that's what you need.

I had a similar issue last night. I was wrapped head to toe in the graphic for my inventory. Really bizarre.

Ok, you've cleared your cache.

Next, if you haven't already, try popping into edit appearance and back out.

If no joy, enable the advanced menu (ctrl-alt-D) and then Advanced->Character->Rebake Textures (or Ctrl-Alt-R).

If *still* no joy, try losing your settings files. How to find and kill them is at
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Help:Blank_or_Black_Text
(Even though it's about a different problem, corruption in those same files can cause baking troubles.)

Next to the user_settings folder, you will find other folders, one for each avatar name you use in SL. Check also in those folders for any *.xml files and delete them too.

Finally, start up the viewer, clear the cache again, and try all that rebake business again if needed.

i'm totally black now except for my eyes (quite nice really
but i dont want to suddenly rebake in the middle of, erm anywhere
without a stitch on!

are you sure you dont have a black latex skin on?(not Latex clothes but rather a skin made to look like latex which is used if you want the head to be covered as well).

Hiya, i've had this happen sometimes. I go into appearance, change top or jeans or whatever's black while in appearance & then change back to the original (Still in appearance) then come out & it's fine

This has happend to me since I first signed on SL a year ago, when I go totally nude, I get black maybe its arms maybe its legs, maybe just one arm or a lower leg... Very frustrating for sure!
I tried all the suggested issues myself and still happens so.. What I did was when I found this issue happening, I go into appearence and create a new undershirt and use clear texture, this helps for a while anyway.

I find it happens mostly when using poseballs, it hasn't happend to me in a while but has happend to a few friends.. So they slap on the clear shirt and they seem good to go.
Taking the top pants etc off they seem to be ok after.

(if you need a clear texture IM me in world and I will send one over)

Hi Misha! This all-black thing sometimes happens when you are using two monitors. If so, try setting SL up to run on your main monitor, clear cache, relog, and rebake.

It's really broken

Whew, I've managed to get my hair, earrings, necklace,
bangles and shoes back but i've lost my eyes.

I ended up totally uninstallng sl and removing any bits left over where it was
[btw, on Vista the location of the settings files is:

(whatever_user_name)->AppData->Roaming->SecondLife->user_settings

with the avatar directory "next" to that one.

...

I've decached, rebaked, rebooted, restarted the darn compy!
I've stripped to the bone and back again.
Thanks for the info bout the clear clothing, didn't seem to do it for me tho.

Oh when i go to edit appearance nothing sensible shows in the
editing subwindows (for example, all images in the 'body' adjustment
section show a sort of interference pattern, mainly black with flecks of color).

I might have to get used to it, lol!
I'm hoping it'll go away after a sleep (0423 here atm).
