What's with "detecting hardware" at startup? Can I safely shut it off?

It seems the viewer takes about forever "detecting hardware" at startup. What is it doing? Why does it have to do it every single time? Why does it take so long? What if I turned it off using the "-noprobe" option? Would anything suffer?

Well, I just checked and the "Have it off" card can only be used with valid student identification (gamestation).

Seriously, though, no, you don't have to make it detect your hardware everytime. You can uncheck that option unless you make any major changes.
