Does anyone here know how to get rid of GIMP completely? I had downloaded GIMP at someones suggestion a while back....so I could try my hand at doing clothes & skin (which I have no patience for thus far so I axed that idea lol)

I've since got a great Adobe Elements program which I love.....and I tried to delete GIMP......but all I could do was delete the shortcut......it does NOT show up anywhere in add/remove programs. So now....any image files I save or download wind up as 'GMP' and I cannot open some of them. I can only open them if I go into photoshop first......but it has completely glitched all my files and it's driving me nuts.

Anyone know how to un-do GIMP....short of re-booting windows back to it's original status?

Did you try running the Uninstall routine that comes with Gimp?

You can go into the control panel and select add/remove programs. Then to remove any remaining files I always check the c drive for the program folder. Then delete any gimp files there as well. Good luck!

Start>All Programs>Gimp>Uninstall

Just deleting the shortcut won't work, the files are still there. This is not unique to Gimp, it's part and parcel of Windows.

Also, to tell Windows not to open the files as Gimp files anymore:

Control Panel>Folder Options>File Types

Choose the extensions of the files that you'll be working with (e.g. .jpg, .tga, .bmp, whatever) and then click the "Change" button, and choose your new program. This will let you tell Windows how to open those files.

I've had this happen to me with other programs. I know GIMP comes with an uninstaller so you might look at "Start....programs......GIMP.......and look for an uninstall option. The other thing you might do is go back to where you downloaded your copy of GIMP and redownload it (making sure you download the proper version for your OS). Reinstall it making sure you install the recommended files (don't do the custom or anything). Now, you should be able to uninstall it.

If you want to make sure all GIMP files are off your computer do a search after your uninstall and manually delete the files. You might have to reassociate how some of your graphics file open with Windows. The tip has been suggested above.

Hope this helped...........and good luck.

You may even have to look in the GIMP folder itself for the uninstaller.

I think I wasn't clear....

GIMP does NOT show up in.....add/remove.....nor does it appear to have an uninstall option under the files located in the C drive. I'm a bit wary of installing it yet again....since I didn't do any custom the first time around...it was the proper version....I even used it a few times. It seems as if some of these programs are like parasites once you install them (oh look, it even has a file called parasiterc!!!) LOL Thanks for the suggestions....I'm going to keep working on it. I guess what bugs me is even tho I only work exclusively in Adobe and save my files as jpg..... they still show up as 'theGIMP' when I view the files as thumbnails. It IS a parasitic file dam it! lol

Don't know if this helps, but my GIMP Uninstall program can be reached via Start>All Programs>GIMP. It's also listed under T (as in The Gimp) in Change or Remove programs.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

You can also change the program that opens the file.

Right click the .jpg select "Open With" scroll all the way to the bottom and select Choose Program. Select whatever program you want and then be sure the check the "Always use this program to open this kind of file" box.

I use Gimp and the version I have shows up in add/remove and also has uninstall option. Strange. Maybe got a bad install or somethings.

Milla,
You've told Windows to associate all these files as Gimp files. You need to tell it to associate them with a different programs.

To tell Windows not to open the files as Gimp files anymore:

Control Panel>Folder Options>File Types

I just checked my version of GIMP and it has an uninstaller as well.

Where did you download GIMP from? I'm suspicious if you can't uninstall, perhaps you should check for viruses and spyware. I've had no issues uninstalling and reinstalling the GIMP on my office computer. If everything checks out on the security front, try getting the most current copy from gimp.org and reinstall, and then use the built-in uninstall utility. Perhaps you accidentally deleted the uninstaller.

On my computer the shortcut for the uninstaller is "C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\unins000.exe". Try to see if that program is still there - you may have just whacked the shortcut icon. You will also want to uninstall GTK+, which is the windows manager for the GIMP.

Sorry to hear you decided against the GIMP. If its a question of learning curve, the supplied documentation isn't all that friendly; I found that reading "Grokking the GIMP" from gimp-savvy.org, its the best tutorial I've seen for it.

My GIMP has both an uninstall in the start menu and it's listed in Windows add/remove. You might look for "The GIMP" instead of just "GIMP". I'm running The GIMP 2.2.17.
