For some reason my partner and I are having problems with our feet. Unless we stand on a prim we are sunk up to our ankles in the ground. It isn't just a sim problem as it happens on our mainland home and our island. Makes it had to change shoes lol.
Is there a solution for this?

on SL terrain this is a common issue there is no fix! as far as i know.. but often times on 'natural' SL terrain (that is anything other than perfectly flat) peoples feet sink in.

Simple solution: sit down and then stand up again. It's the only thing that works when it happens to me. If there are no seats, just rez a prim, sit on it, then stand up and delete it.

This has always been around, but it got much more noticeable with H4. Now you can sink even on prim ground. That's why I changed my tiny quad AO to be higher than pre-H4, so people don't completely lose their paws in the floor. If your feet sink because of a glitch, the aforementioned sit-and-stand technique works, but it won't get rid of the additional sink. One of the few things I created a fix for in my products, but don't really complain about much
