Particle Producing Etiquet

I am designing a Tips Jar that produces particles when tips are payed, actually trying to roughly emulate one I have bought, and serves it purpose for when I DJ, but want something I can play around with that I can use while hosting that does not have DJ stamped on it and the particles.

Anyway my question is, what is the polite number of particles to produce at any one time? How may would actually begin to adversely effect residents with older computers?

I know the absolute limit a resident can see is 4094 or something close to that, have no intention of producing anywhere near that amount.

Thanks in advance.

My preference. No particles at all. For your benefit, a simple green chat thanking them for the tip is a good reminder to others to do the same. Particles are a reminder to me to go elsewhere.

Goodness :o Make something immersive, by all means :)

Personally, if it was just a single burst, I wouldn't worry at all about how many particles it used.

I have particles turned off completely whenever I go to clubs ... they are killers for low-end gear. So yah, go for it, 4096 if you like. Just don't count on all your patrons seeing them.

The actual figure is 8192.

See 'Edit | Preferences | Adv Graphics | Max. Particle Count'

As for "etiquette", for me, the value is 8192 :)

EDIT: Although for the Tip Jars I produce, the number is only about 20 to 30 per tip/donation. But very tastefully done!

That's probably what I should do. My computer handles them fine, I just can't. I can't handle them from tip jars or from people either. Same thing with spankers, Yahooo's, and all that other stuff. I like good music and fun chat. Guess I'm kind of a party pooper.

Well what I had in mind was have it give off 1 to 40 particles depending on the size of the tip, maybe a few as 25 or less, I will have to play around with it a little and see what the breaking point is before there are too may to be legible.

I'd go with 25 or maybe a bit less. And watch the resolution on the particle textures. For soemthing often used like this, I'd reccomend something in the 32x32 range. Or even 16x16 if you can pull it off.

TIP:: So the patrons don't see "grey squares" floating through space with low end systems not being able to load the textures fast enough, place a small prim on your tip jar with the particle texture on it. That way the texture is already loaded in teh client systems before the particles ever fire off.

Dude, you are a true and good friend, and I love you like the brother that my mom claims she never had, but you are in fact acting like a flaming douche on white toast with a side order of dickknob salsa..maybe you should reconsider this course of action and we go find something else to do.

I'm curious as to why you would want to do this at all?
I throw a fair few Lindens at musicians tip jars every night and as Brad suggested a simple line of text is enough. If the club or venue is busy, the last thing anyone is going to want is particles added to the grey goo.
Also, why would you want to indicate how large the tip was?
Just wondering?

spankers..tsk...they REALLY irritate me...I'll join that party pooper line then. Its kinda amusing maybe once...but repetatively over and over and over...no..not at all.

Hm particles...i kinda like those tho...specially if they are PINK :)

I'd definately try to stay under 100.
If you really work at it, you can get AWESOME looking bursts with very few particles. I have been working with particles since I FIRST logged on to Second Life. Though they are laggy for SOME, I think they LOOK awesome. Just be careful about the amount you put out at once...like I said, with some work, you can get good at this.

Check out Jopsy's place for learning particles! I dunno if I spelled his name right though ;/ It's something like Jopsy Pendragon ???

Well as for why, like anything else I create, the first and formost reason it to see if I can and to then have something I am in complete control over. No scripts locked, no shapes or textures locked, it is mine to experiment with as and when I wish.

Yes particles may not be the best idea, but the tip jars me and my wife uses both use them and we have yet to have any complaints, but... Hmmm... guess I can script in a menu engine to turn them off, or turn them on.

See that is why I like having things I totally control, I am not stuck thinking "Damn I wish it could...". ;)

Since each user is allowed to set their own particle limit... Use as many as needed to look good for you. (^_^) Most people that don't like particles will probably have them turned way down or off anyway. (^_^)y

And what's so wrong with spankers? If you don't like them... Don't click on peoples' butts... (<_<;) Actually.... Don't click anywhere on me, you will not be pleased. (^_^)y

i agree, bradley. spankers and text spam annoy me to no end.

tho i'm guilty of a particle bomb now and then ... but only at climatic points in the music being played. and never for more that a few seconds.

but back to the OPs question .. i'd find particles in a dj's tip jar to be ... well... tacky.

Now that's one of the silliest comments I've ever heard. Clicking on someones butt once or twice is one thing. I don't mind that or even doing it myself. I do take issue with the entire screen being filled with spanker spam which happens way too often for my taste and not anything that *I* have any control of. Maybe I have been going to the wrong places.

if you've been going to devil inside or blueboy club ... you'll have seen and HEARD all the spanking going on.

though, thankfully, i don't see or hear much of it anymore. i think the novelty has worn off ... finally.

or make it simpler

dialog for the owner to disable particles, show 5, 10, 25, 50 particles

personally, i hate particles but don`t have them turned off, but if done right, they can add something to the surrounding
usability counts more then a few particles but if added, give the end user the choice
