I am finding that only being in SL for a short while the programme shuts down. It then asks me to send in a report.

It is so annoying and spoiling the experience for me. Can anyone give me a clue as to why this is happening and how I can get to resolve it.

Is it me or the system?????

Hi LadyBeverley,

This was happening to me and then I noticed on the front page of SL there was the opportunity to download a 'newer' version of SL (top right hand corner of the screen). I downloaded it and the problem stopped.

Maybe this will help?

Welcome to Second Life.
There are any number of reasons for the crash. One being, it's just the state of the program now. I have days when I crash every 30 minutes or so. Other days I will be online for hours with no problems.

But, lets start with the obvious. Do you know your system specs? PC or Mac? Operating system, sound card, video card , and anything eles you can tell us about the system?

Once that is done, be sure your video drivers are up to date. This is a big one. Also, while you wait for us to chew it over and post some advice, try going to a different sim some distance away and see if it is any better or more of the same.

Cheers

There is nothing like that for me. I only installed this a few days ago and have version 1.18.5 (3).

Is this the latest version?

Reading around this may be a SL issue to do with teleporting. Which is what happens to me.

Hopefully it will resolve itself over time.

I have a PC using Vista.
Sound card is built, so don't know what it is. I have found it ok therefore did not buy one.
I have Nvidia GForce 8800 with latest drivers....did that today.

So spec wise I should be ok

Sound is most likely a Realtek chip. It's very common for onboard sound. Sound is seldom a problem that causes crashes, but it's wise to check. Of course the easiest way to check is to turn the sound off -- if it quits crashing you found the problem.

Video you can not do that with and it is also the #1 crash point. Vista will usually give you a little pop up message near the lower right once SL crashes saying something like the "VPU quit responding and has been reset." I forget the actual wording but that's close.

Also, there seems to be a bug with teleporting lately. Some people will crash on their second tp while logged in. If you are crashing on teleports there is not much to say other ten they are aware of the problem and working on a fix.

I've been crashing all the time since installing Vista - spec is fine, have all the latest drivers, etc; it seems to be a vista thing. At first I was able to ignore it, but after months of it, I am now close to the point of just selling up what I have left in SL, uninstalling and finding something else to spend my spare time on.

And before anyone asks, no, you can't have my stuff :p

I hope you have better luck than me, LadyBeverley.

Why not go back to XP?

I've considered it, but I have got quite used to using Vista for other stuff now, and SL is the only thing I have a problem with.

What processor do you have? Vista seems more demanding than XP as LL reccommend 2Gh or better - you can get away with less running SL under XP.

I'm using an Intel Core2 Quad Q6600, so that should be easily sufficient :/

I find the best Windows OSes for stablity and resources usage are Windows 2000 and Windows XP in that order. Yes I know 2000 is old but with the right hardware and a little care it's bullet proof. XP is just a tad less stable, prettier and a little more end user friendly, but you take a hit on resource usage. As far as under the hood operation they are virtually identical.

My laptop runs Windows 2000 Pro and against all odds runs SL on the Windlight Viewer, if only just. Frame rates suck with only on board 32MB dedicated video (Usually between 10 to 15 FPS), but with a gig and a half of memory it manages.

Not really but you become one.. trying to make the system work. SL is the toughest program I ever tried to run. I have been playing with PCs and writing code since 1979 when I bought my TRS-80 II.

That happens to me, too, Starling...lol. It's all greek to me, although I do find myself starting to understand graphics cards and memory more now then I used to. Before SL, I was only a normal PC user...didn't even know about disk defrag until I met my current husband...lol. I posted in the technical issues forum on a new PC i'm looking to buy because I was clueless on how it would work with SL, so wanted to ask those in the know.

You especially become one when you are in the market for a new computer. My main consideration was how well the game would function on my laptop. *g*
