I'm astonished that only 11 people have viewed this. I'm in a similar situation. I've managed to voice to a RL friend in SL but my fiancee who has the current viewer, has voice enabled, has the dot, cannot voice with me .... soooo ... /me bumps thread

might want to consider testing with another headset/mic. could be compatibility issues.

If you are using Windows XP, go to control panel and open the Firewall icon, click the Exceptions Tab, make sure Secondlife.exe, SLVoice.exe and SLVoiceClient.exe are all checked.. while there uncheck things like iTunes and any programmes you don't remember installing. Close that window. Open the Audio icon (in control panel), make sure your actual sound devices are selected and use the hardware check wizard to check that your microphone actually works with the system, and that the settings like volume, boost etc are all correct. Search the web for a VIOP testing website and make sure your connection can support VIOP, you are looking to be way up the table as a low result will fade to nothing when the SL Client is running and sucking bandwidth. If you are using a USB headset, make sure there are no driver conflicts and that the drivers are fully loaded before starting SL. If you run a wireless router, hard wire your system (preferably ethernet), latencies are too high for VIOP in most cases. Run SL and go into preferences-Voice and use the drop down boxes to select your actual sound devices, use the wizard to make sure you get a volume detection (green triangles) registering your microphone. Make sure you have your headphones/mic plugged into the right outlets on your system (front sockets rarely work unless turnned on with the soundboards programme, MB version sometimes are turnned on through the BIOS) and that you have not muted the mic with an inline switch, turn your volume up on your headset... if you see any names in the Active List in SL, click each person and turn up their volume sliders (not sticky)... wait a few years and the 3rd party voice server may recognise you and allow you to participate.. well for a while anyway, then you TP or logout.. and go through the whole thing again... Don't forget, looking at the 'Talk' button there is a tiny icon to the left, clicking that will keep your mic open... so no beating the kids or have a coughing fit.... BTW, it works flawlessly for me... well 10% of the time lol..

SHOUT to that guy, he is a jerk, its his crappy headphones that has turned your pure and harmonic tones into Nora Batty... , then click his name in Active Users list and check the Mute box...
