hi all; I'm doing this research (for my studies) about virtual worlds and i desperately seek assistance:
i want to cary out an interview with regular residents of SL about motivations, experiences... in SL; it's an in-depth-interview so you'll just speak for about 30 min with no particular questions just few ones..
so plz plz i need ur help (7 to 12 residents is just perfect)
oh and another thing, well i must keep record of the interviews so we'll need to use an IM program with the audio conversation option
thx again anyways

Why don't you just wander around in-world and ask with a "I'm a student. Can I have 30 minutes of your time, please?" placard or sandwich board?

If i have to go voice with you, i'm going to have to charge.
Especially if there is to be heavy breathing, or fake moaning.

We get lots of requests for help with academic research in these forums.
Most are met with about the same level of respect that you receiving.
If this is for a class, you might want to speak with your professor about writing a proper, professional request for research participants.
At a minimum, identify who you are (school, department of study), who is overseeing you (professor, university research board), the nature of the research, what will be required of participants, how much time it will take them to participant, how you will use the results, how you will safeguard participants privacy, and where they might access the results when the study is complete.
A professional request for research participants might yield you a lot of serious participants, and minimize the criticism.

But then there's the data collection apparatus: a voice IM program? Some small subset of SL residents would consider doing SL Voice. A much smaller subset would consider doing voice using some other program. Whatever results are obtained would have dubious validity outside this extraordinarily selective sample of subjects.

The best collection media is going to be text with logs, otherwise you also limit yourself to those that can/will speak

i agree with you Amity Slade but the study requires to keep something in the dark for a start: known what i really seek in the answers can lead people to ansewr me the way i want and it's just not good but nevertheless you are right i should have introduced my study properly (my bad) so better late then never: country: tunisia university: ihec carthage (high institute of commercial studies) departement: marketing professor in charge: marketing Ph D GHARBI J.E. purpose of the study: virtual worlds/networking/virtual consumption the study is exploratory so i'll start with in depth interviews, analyse them, then focus on some parts of the interviews and construct a structured interview and redo the experiment (not with same residents, well in fact it doesn't bother if it is with same ones) then analyse all the data theories, interviews... and publish the study. the result will be published between 01/2009 and 05/2009 and since i don't know in what journal or review i'll post a copy in my blog : http://necromancer.asslema.net/residents who will respond to my request will be asked to talk in general about SL (no specification) just describe feelings, experiences, motivations... for about 30 min, the voice conversation will be recorded (as i said in my first post) personal information needed will be: -your resident name -you country -average hours per week spent in SL -and how long have been visiting SL (date of subscription) i hope it's clear enough now and i really need some help

From: Shanks Gothly i agree with you Amity Slade but the study requires to keep something in the dark for a start: *WARNING*WARNING*WARNING* I think I'll just keep my opinions/experiences/etc. "in the dark" - kk? Cool ~ ~ ~ As someone who did use an internet community in the 80's for research and conducted it according to rules, ethics, regulations, etc., these constant quasi-survey requests really irk me.
