I regularly receive emails and inworld messages like the following, and I'd like to know how to stop them: ------------------------------------- The object [deleted to comply with forum rules] has sent you a message from Second Life: Commercial and Reisdential land available, Affordable prices and various sizes available, check out our website for more info http://[deleted to comply] = [deleted to comply] is owned by Miles Beck = http://slurl.com/secondlife/[deleted to comply] To stop receiving these emails, log in to Second Life and uncheck "Send IM to Email" in the General tab of the Preferences window or visit: http://secondlife.com/account/im_off.php?yada...yada... -------------------------------------- I tried to TP to the location in the slurl so I could mute the object "owned by" me. But I got a message that I didn't have access to the area. Unchecking "Send IM to Email" in my preferences is not a viable solution. It's like telling someone to stop turning on their computer to avoid spam and viruses. Do any of you get these? (I'm guessing the answer is, "yes." Is there a way for me to mute this object if I can't even get in the same region? (That may be a dumb question -- I'm not very familiar with muting.)

Is it really the entire region that you can't get to or just one parcel on it.
If it's the whole region, I'd do a support ticket and ask LL to return the object.
If it's just a part of the region, get as close as you can to it and try to find it with your camera.

Thanks, Meade. I tried to TP to other areas of the region and got the same message. I was going to TP to an adjacent region to see if I could do something from there, but got an interruption and ran out of time. I'll try as soon as I can.

Which region is it? If it's mainland, you're not banned from the region itself..
Also, if there are other regions next to it, try flying over 50m above ground level. Unless you're explicitly banned from the area, you'll be able to fly over it.

You can't enter into a sim over a parcel you don't have access to regardless of hight. Not sure why it works that way, when, once your in the sim you can fly over the parcel in question.

If you get the message inworld, ar it. I had to do that with similar spam, stopped by the next day.

You can cam into the area find the object and mute it
Also AR the owner of the object or goto support or live chat and let them know

The next time I get that message inworld, I'll AR it.
I TPed to an adjacent parcel and cammed to the location. On the map, it looks like land and there is a green dot representing an avi in that location. But when I cammed in, all I could see was water (no land at all) and my highlight beam. The avi's green dot did not show on the mini-map.
I know there is a delay with green avi dots on the map, but I waited a very long time with no change: land and a green dot on the map, no land and no green dot on the mini-map and my cam. I guess not having access to that region also blocks my cam from accessing it.

I didn't mention the estate earlier because I didn't know if that would ID the offender and thus be against the forum rules. But since you asked, it's Sensual Estate. I was not able to enter it by flying above 50m.

From: Rhaorth Antonelli where were you when you got the msg? I was offline and got it in email, then when I logged in (on my shop's parcel) it appeared.

If you can find out the real owner of the object, muting that avatar will stop the messages. Unfortunately, there's a bug in the latest server version, http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-2524 which means that every email you receive will state "= [Object] is owned by [you]"

From: Gellan Glenelg If you can find out the real owner of the object, muting that avatar will stop the messages. Good idea! I searched, and based on the group info, I found the name of the likely owner. I also found a website with an email address. I sent a polite email and asked for removal. (I've been receiving a similar message from a different source that includes the infuriating line, "We cannot remove your name from our mailing list." If I receive another message, I'll mute and AR him.

(That may be a dumb question -- I'm not very familiar with muting.) I had a similar problem where I was getting close on 20,000 IMs per 24 hours from a scripted object that was broken. I managed the TP to the location stated for the object but it wasn't there so I wasn't able to mute it. It took 3 ARs and 2 Live chat sessions but eventually LL found the offending object and removed it. In the meantime I DID temporarily disable the IM-to-email feature because 20,000 emails a day was just unbearable.

"Mute" works inworld, but still allows messages to be received via email
07-02-2008 08:43
As I mentioned above, I am not allowed access to the object's location, so I couldn't mute it directly. However, the next time I got one of these messages inworld, I was able to mute the object from the blue menu's "mute" button.
The result of muting it: I no longer receive the messages inworld. To my surprise, however, I am still receiving the messages via my email.

Thanks, HoneyBear. I've done that, and now that I'm no longer receiving the messages inworld, the situation is tolerable. But I sure am surprised that muting worked inworld, yet doesn't prevent me from receiving the messages via email. It makes sense, depending on just where in the transmission chain the mute command kicks in; I assumed it was at a higher level.

Unless the region itself is restricted access, which does not happen on the mainland, or you are explicitly listed on the ban list, flying at least 50m above ground will get anywhere.. I could be wrong about this but I really don't think I am. I tested this. Here are my results. 1. One neighbor with whom I share a sim border has no public access to their land. I was able to fly my avatar (above the 50m ban lines) from one sim to the next. 2. On a parcel that I own that’s on the sim border, I banned my alt. Then I logged in an alt, hopped in a helicopter, and tried to fly into the banned area. This was from within the sim just to see what would happen. I was given a message that I was banned. The helicopter was returned to my inventory. And on the funny side, I ended up doing the trampoline bounce on top of the neighbor’s 50m ban lines. 3. Rezzed another helicopter for my alt and then flew out of the sim. I raised up to 900m and tried to cross the border to go over top the explicit ban. I was able to do so. Then I flew straight down and got the ban message and helicopter returned. Oddly enough, I again ending up bouncing on top of another neighbor’s ban lines. --Hugsy

Aaagh. I have been getting spam like that but I never bothered really looking at the messages. But sure enough, this is what I'm seeing: I definitely don't own any objects by that name or on that sim. This is a bug that spammers are exploiting. I'm totally filing a jira on this if there's not one already.

Okay, I've searched jira, and I found one existing jira that MIGHT have to do with this problem, but it makes no mention of the incorrect object owner in the emails. Also, it seems of limited use to a spammer, since it requires the spammer to have the UUID of a rezzed object that the victim owns: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-5263Since I felt that was too vague- and possibly a different problem- I filed a separate jira specifically for this issue: Offline IMs from spam objects appear to originate from recipient instead of object ownerhttp://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-2598Please vote!
