I have no idea how to word the title but I found this hidden in a blog thread and thought you all might like to see it. I'm still not too sure why it wasn't possible to have the design etc stable before release but meh. It appears it's the software's fault rather than it being ours for asking for it - so that's a step in the right direction I suppose. This is from Blue https://blogs.secondlife.com/thread/2914?tstart=0From: someone We're sorry for any confusion regarding the SL Answers format. If you're not aware, SL Answers is currently in Beta, and Lexie has been working to get the necessary tools in place, helping with moderation etc. I've been taking care of the blog comments/discussions in general, and Patsy is helping with XStreet SL forum moves to the Commerce forum here on Clearspace. Coming soon....moderation team that handles all the various sections, whew! It's not currently possible to set a section to automatically default to Question or Discussion (terminology specific to the Clearspace format) but that will be changing when we apply the next update. This will aleviate a good deal of confusion and I would agree that due to elements like this, the transition to our new system has its challenges. I will be absolutely open-hearted with you and say that I would MUCH rather have had the new blogs/forums spring forth fully formed, like Athena from the head of Zeus. But unfortunately this is simply not possible. As such, I thank you for your patience during the ongoing transition. Regarding threads being moved -- A Discussion, (Clearspace's terminology for "forum thread" created in SL Answers may be moved so that people looking for Answers don't have to sort through threaded Discussions to find them. Similarly, a post in one of the Discussion channels that is marked as a question may be moved to the SL Answers Channel to help people looking for them. As to the nature of moderation for SL Answers, questions added in the general thread that fit under a specific category may be moved to help folks find the topic-specific answers provided more easily. No posts are moved to "bury them"....honest. You can see plenty of critique of the Lab happening in plain sight. There is no big conspiracy. As for the people's decision to use these tools to criticize the Lab's decisions, policies or priorities, that's legitimate. You can frequently hear me tell you to hold LL's feet to the fire. We all benefit from this. We do require, however, that you remain respectful. Creating a hostile environment discourages your fellow residents from speaking up. The Lab truly does want to hear from you, but if you are not able to phrase your criticism respectful, please contact me (your pal, blue@lindenlab.com) directly rather than making a vitriolic post to a public channel. You will not be allowed to troll, flame, or make personal attacks. Doing so may result in your violating the Guidelines and being subject to disciplinary action. Once again, I sincerely thank you for your respectful participation here, and hope you can bear with us while these new tools are under construction.

And with LL, beta means that it will be that way for a couple of years. I think they're hoping we'll forget that it was supposed to "improve" so they don't have to do any work.
Can anyone list anything about it that has actually improved in functionality?

From: Couldbe Yue I'm still not too sure why it wasn't possible to have the design etc stable before release but meh. My guess is that some security issue was found with the old system, and the old forums had to go. Even terminal placements were restarted, the big rush to bridge the SL and Xstreet balances had the brakes slammed.

Can anyone list anything about it that has actually improved in functionality? They have made a number of improvements and fixes. The only one I can point to right off is turning on the ability to add a forum avatar picture, but there were quite a few others.

I find it difficult to relate to SL Answer's "beta" status. It seems a convenient way of avoiding some deserved criticism. If it was called an "alpha" it would be hard to complain, but one expects a beta release to have more complete functionality. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle#BetaUnfortunately, it gives the impression that LL doesn't know where the product is going or what it's supposed to do, UNLESS what we see is pretty much what they intend it to be. What I mean is, if their "more to come" is something substantially different, then what we're seeing isn't an beta. Honestly, it seems to have been designed by ppl who have never used such a system or have any practical idea of its purpose. The elements that are missing aren't DETAILS, they're fundamental elements, and what *is* there just doesn't cut the mustard. So... things will be added, tweaked, but the basic faulty foundation has been laid.

Lindens always say "The Lab truly does want to hear from you,.."....what is the point if they rarely act upon what majority of it's residents want. Remember the Zindra threads...over 12000 posts a lot were constructive and valid comments.....all were trashed as LL had made up there mind well in advance of announcing Adult Content changes.

Poor Blue. I still think all in all, HE wants to try and do the right thing for everyone, but is stuck with idiots for bosses. Reminds me of when I worked in Publc School.

I've been enjoying Blue's lolcatz postings very much. I get so busy here, that I don't have time to go over and browse the lolcatz site as much any more. Very nice touch.

From: Brenda Connolly Poor Blue. I still think all in all, HE wants to try and do the right thing for everyone, but is stuck with idiots for bosses.. /me is really tempted to agree but his call (as quoted in the OP) for us to show respect for LL does nothing but anger me. That's a two-way street and from my point of view, LL really doesn't have much respect for residents - it feels more like contempt and has for a while. Who's paying who here? edit: and I do like Blue. He does indeed seem to be one of the good guys but I think he's gotten really out-of-touch.

http://ihasahotdog.com/For those who are less cat inclined. Personally, not even an LoLcat can make up for the mess over there. I refuse to call it a forum. It's a blog.. and not even one in a forum's clothing. What irks me most is that it's following LL's recent attitude of, "Lets slap it up there, call it a beta, make two tiny changes and call it done in a year." Great, you can add avatar picts, so you can tell who's posting. Wooohoooo... Doesn't help with the threading/layout issues that it has. Also, I prefer the term flog. It's what I feel like doing to the one who thought it would be, "such a great idea," to use it in place of a proper forum. Sadly, because of this decision, I must assume said Linden must love being flogged...

The problem is they are trying to reinvent the wheel in too many places. Theres perfectly good blogs, and forums, and search, made by people who are much better at it than Linden Lab.
They really need to focus on the one thing they do better than anyone else. I think that Adam Smith pointed that out around 200 years ago - division of labor.

From: Rene Erlanger Lindens always say "The Lab truly does want to hear from you,.."....what is the point if they rarely act upon what majority of it's residents want. But they do want to hear what residents think and they always act on resident feedback . LL: "We're doing this and that..." Residents A-G: various criticism Resident H: "There's a typo in ..." Residents I-Q: more criticsm Resident R: "I want it in red" Residents S-Z: pitchforks and torches LL fixes typo. LL: We've carefully read all of your feedback and we've already made some changes based on it. Expect us to address the other concerns very soon! 10 months later red is added as an option (which turns everything green instead but that's alright when you're working on "cutting edge" stuff). *Resolved*

From: Viktoria Dovgal Even terminal placements were restarted REALLY? God I so want one who do I talk to, where do I go? I can't find the "in order to get a terminal your land must have THESE settings" page anymore.. so I don't even know how workable this would be.. but given my shop's reliance on XStreet for our "Buy as gift" functionality, having a terminal IN the shop would be a bonus.
