I use Metabolt simply as a low priority background chat tool although some people use it because they can run multiple accounts without loading up their system. If what Legalos is saying, LL could start filtering out the type of tool used to access SL and not simply the end result. _____________________

Premature.
LL already said they are not BANNING bots, and the bots are useful. LL is changing how traffic is calculated as well as punishing people who try to manipulate traffic by means of bots. _____________________

How does this "bot software detection" work? Where was that described? Is it in the 1.23 viewer? What does it do?

It has nothing to do with banning bots but how they can be detected. And here's a snippet from a comment Legalos put in his forums.
it could be, depending on the circumstances. ideally they should parcel out where the models operate because then they won't be adding traffic to the main parcel [8:24] Jack Linden: we do want to support all valid uses of Bots, but a store with model bots is clearly gaining an advantage from that, so we'd probably look into it _____________________
