Hoping someone will know what's going on here. On my laptop, the fonts in chat are just fine as I'm typing and as they show on the screen. But in the local chat box and in IM, they're crooked, look almost like they're melting. Anyone have a clue why this is happening?

My first guess is that you have an unsupported or marginally supported graphics adapter in your machine. Post the contents of the Help->About... box that describes your computer and graphics chip and someone will be able to offer better advice.

I'd try playing with Edit / Preferences / General / UI Scaling to see if it helps. See if the pictures in http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-4572 look familiar. [ETA: Mal raises a good point: embedded Intel graphics are never gonna be a real slick way to run SL. But there seems to be a font problem spanning other graphics chipsets, too, according to the cited jira.]
