Ramblings in need of adjustment

I am a basic who rents a 1024 plot on a friend's island for a decent price. It's a nice place and I'm learning more and more as I build my home. I have art I will start selling, but want to learn more about scripting so objects I make have more oomph to them. It seems the oomph part is very important in SL vs the 3D communities I used to belong to. It's okay: I'll adapt.

However no selling is allowed on residential property. I thought once I got started, if I upgraded to premium and made a shop/gallery on a 512 (wow after the 1024 that's gonna be a shack) for free monthly maintenance. No weekly rental in a mall to have a vend (unless I actually sell enough that I won't care, but anything like that is a wayyys off if ever). Searching for mainland property for a decent price, it always seems to be some rocky ledge between big properties. It doesn't look at all like that land Torley found on his video, which was flat and just had a couple stray things on it; I bet one of his other selves put it up for sale or something.

I guess I can still put up my art in my home then add a teleportation pad to bring people to a shop where all the stuff is. This is all a ways off I think. I can at least start with putting those little web order boxes on my current property - that's allowed.

Now I'm wondering: can one own two or more independent plots of land? I own the 1024 on a private island. Is SL going to see a mainland 512 as the complimentary maintenance one? Will they both be listed in my account? Does that cause a conflict in one's status?

Then: how do you know something is on the mainland? Yeah I can SEARCH for mainland land, but how can you actually tell it's on the mainland? Can't really tell from the map. Even private islands exist in relation to other private islands on it. Some of these so-called mainland properties look like privately owned islands, and why are there such wild prices for 512sqm? Doesnt Governor Linden sell them directly anymore? Why is it all about buying or bidding on owned land?

My brain hurts. I should know more for someone under 2 months old.

Only mainland counts for your tier to Linden lab, the 1024 private estate doesn't count in the equation.

The other side of the coin is you can't use your 512M tier free for estate land.

You might want to consider a skybox, they really aren't the worst thing in the world and someone can tp right into your store. Then the condition of the land on the ground is irrelevant.

If you really want flat land then take a look around using the map, look for the yellow squares and TP. Personally I'd reccomend Molay, and Zeckersine as nice places to start, but mainland changes quickly.

You don't really own on a private island, you are really renting it. Mainland is all that counts towards your tier and all you will see on your web account page. So a 512 mainland will not cost extra past the premium membership.

When you are at a piece of property, click About Land and then the Covenant tab - Mainland does not have Covenants at all and private islands almost always do.

If it's not mainland it won't show up when you search for mainland.

Just to add that the land search is badly in need of some loving care and attention. Filtering by size only, flat, green, sand, waterfront etc. would really improve visibility for the better plots.

Holocluck...

1. You can own and/or rent as many different pieces of land as you like.
2. There IS land on private estates that's zoned commercial or dual use. It's up to the estate owner.

Shameless plug: When we have a vacant store at Lebettu, we offer a month's free rent on it to startup businesses. We're going to be building a few more shops there, so please keep an eye on us.

Thanks all for the information and advice. I dont know anything about places and their reputations. I fly around a lot to get ideas, and sometimes I wonder how people can afford those homes. LOL

See, I thought that as well, then saw the land I rent listed in my account and cowered. "They know!" I thought.

The estate owners set up a new island with higher prices for parcels you can live or sell on. The cost I'm with now works for me, and I *think* I can make enough early on to cover that. If anything the weekly amount from the premium status account would keep me solvent.

Are Mainland sales usually in L$? I assume so.

Can the 512 vary from square to narrow? Or is it always the same in proportion?

Any parcel held in your name is going to show up in My Land. But in your account page on the secondlife.com website, that is a different matter. You can see how much mainland you can purchase there at your tier level.

Typically, yes.

They do vary, and can be oddly shaped. But most are the 16x32 rectangle.
