I manage a venue that raises money for a charity. I had a strange conversation yesterday that some of you might enjoy seeing the condensed version:
Him (IM'ing from the blue): Hi! Great venue, it's nice you raise money for a kids charity
Me: Thank you, I'm so glad you like it!
Him: You are running the venue wrong, though.
Me: How so?
Him: You shouldn't hold concerts or events here.
Me: That's what brings the people here and if they like it, they donate
Him: If you don't hold any events, people will be curious what this place it. They will come here, look at it, and give you money.
Me: That would certainly save me some time and effort, but honestly I have to disagree with you. Thank you for the suggestion, though!
Him: You will make more money!
Me: Thank you, I'll consider it.
Him: Keep up the good work!
Looking back on it, I wonder if he's given his excellent business advice to the owners of all those empty sims....

so basically the advice is
"Leave your venue empty, and people will just give you money"
You sure he doesn't own a competing venue?

How many donations do you get now when there is no one at your venue, hosting an Event or whatever?

You sure he doesn't own a competing venue? LOL, I hadn't even thought of that! I'd hope the folks managing the other venues would be more creative. I know, they could send over an incredibly gorgeous and charming man who so totally sweeps me off my feet that I forget to schedule anything. Yeah, they should try that.

From: Colette Meiji How many donations do you get now when there is no one at your venue, hosting an Event or whatever? Slim to none, and slim just left town. Every once in a while some will donate during quiet times, but the VAST majority of donations come during events and then mostly during live concerts.

. Or as an old boss of mine used to say; "You've got two hopes; Bob Hope and no hope." Bob never did show up.

Actually I'd have to say I would never even have found your lovely place without the live music events. Any upcoming planned?

Three next week (Leslee McCarey on Wed, Slip Stringfellow on Thurs, and Noma Falta on Friday). We're a little slow because of the holidays. I'm hoping to get a couple in the early week. We've been REALLY lucky with the quality of performers we've been getting since they appear for free and most donate their tips. No one has laughed at me when I approached them. That says a lot of about the kind of people you can find in SL.

I'm always amazingly impressed that so many SL musicians donate their time and talent to charities. It's a fantastic thing to do!

There is a man in the United States who makes a good living by placing a classified ad in a number of major newspapers Nation wide that says simply:
Please send $1.00 to This Address; Box # XXXXX City, State.
People send him the money just out of curiosity. A few Jurisdictions investigated him for Fraud, But since he made no promises, or representations of any Kind No Charges have ever been Laid.
The advice may be wierd, but wierder things have worked in the past.
Angel.

Angel. I may try this. Related to this; there is quite a living to be made selling very very badly made clothes and furniture for only a couple of L$. As a wise man once said, "No one ever went broke appealing to the lowest common denominator."

Hiya Siobhan, I'm currently working on getting a set-up that will allow me to perform in SL. I'm a singer in RL and would love to perform in SL also. If you ever need a musician for an event, I'd be happy to oblige once I'm up and running. If you'd like to have a listen - www.pocketsmusic.wordpress.comOn another note pertaining to this thread..... I wonder if I rented a shop space for selling clothes but didn't put any items in it, would that help sales for me...
