Is there a security orb that works for a person who is renting land? I've been looking at several and they say that you have to deed the orb to work on group land. I would like to avoid doing that.
Do these orbs scan a sperical or cylindrical area? And what about vertical scanning? Do they scan the entire parcel from 0 to 4096m? Or is there a height limit?

If the land is group owned there's no way to avoid deeding the orb as it requires ownership permission to use the parcel based security functions LL provides. Some orbs get around this limitation by using push or other means to force the avatar away from the area but I have no experience with how well these work. As for sensor range, most will scan in a spherical arc and the max range for a single sensor is 96m so it can cover an area 192m across. Some more refined orbs will use a region coordinate based bounding box to further restrict the scan to the user specified interior of the house, to avoid bothering passersby.

You won't happen to have some recommendations for one of those? Sounds like pretty much what I could use...

I can recommend the one I wrote back when I was living in a rental area and had to deal specifically with this sort of thing but then I'm biased because I wrote it and never actually marketed it so a grand total of about a dozen people actually use it. I had heard that some other orbs eventually added similar functionality but I honestly couldn't tell you which ones.

hippoGROUPS. It comes in two pieces - the control box and the ejector. You cannot avoid deeding the ejector, but that's not a big deal. It scans cubic areas or over a radius. And you can network them together, though that's generally not necessary for renters.
