No more survey, I'd delete the thread but I haven't figured it out yet.

Virtual Bodies/Avatar/Second life Survey Name (initials are ok) Age Gender (Female Male Transgendered) Occupation Country Average hours spent 'in-game' Name of avatar Gender of avatar (Male Female Other?) When was your avatar created/when did you join Second life? Does your avatar resemble your real life appearance? (1 not at all 2 3 4 5 very much) Why? Is your avatar an extension of yourself or an alternate personality? What do you while you are in Second life? Interact with friends, new people? Design or build new things? People post here for surveys all the time and as far as I know there is not better place on these forums than the catch-all resident answers. However ... call me paranoid but I think I'll pass on this one. Not much about fashion and too much spamable (to coin a new word) info. |

I went for this one, despite it being a pretty slapdash and shallow set of questions. Nice to see transgendered as an option for once, but too many questions wide open to interpretation. When was your avatar created/when did you join SL? Couldn't you find room for two questions? It'd help if people could define the difference between 'account', 'avatar', 'shape', 'outfit' and the sometimes misused 'character'. My shape rarely changes; my outfit, skin and hair often do. Sometimes this makes me almost unrecognisable, but does that make it a different avatar?
My character is always me (slightly off the leash compared to RL, but me all the same). And by posting a reply, Melissa, you've given as much spamable info as I have. Hmm, spamable/spammable? I'd go with double-m. *grins* _____________________

Thank you for those who've answered and for the critique. I'm aware it's a bit shallow and not in-depth, but I didn't want put too many questions because... well, I hate answering loooong surveys. I'd change some things but then the old answers wouldn't quite work with the new ones.

I may be wrong, but i think there is a rule somewhere that if you conduct a public survey, then you must also publish the results so that the public can read them.

I’d also love to get a picture of you and one of your avatar. The only people who will see these are my class mates and two teachers. why do you need a pic of someone if this is about avatar fashion and such and if those questions that were quoted in a previous post are the ones on your survey, they have nothing to do with fashion at all *pass* _____________________

why do you need a pic of someone if this is about avatar fashion and such and if those questions that were quoted in a previous post are the ones on your survey, they have nothing to do with fashion at all *pass* My current block is not about fashion really, I should have mentioned that ofcourse. Since everyone I know (myself) included knows what it's about I forget that people can't you know... read my mind. I'm doing a Beauty block, we're looking at beauty (and fashion) through a chosen topic. I chose Virtual bodies and avatars, partly because no one else in my group was interested in it and partly because I wanted to know more about the matter. I don't really spend a lot of time in forums, so I'm sorry for any faux pas I've made. I think it is interesting to see how people choose to portray themselves in a world where they can look any way they please and compare it to their real world looks. Which is my roundabout way of explaining why I wanted the photos. notice they said un-official survey, gets them out of a lot of requirements doesn't it I got the idea to do this survey from a book called 'Alter Ego' by Robbie Cooper and wanted to see what I could come up with in a more random manner. In his book he ofcourse has more indepth questions, he interviewed his subjects and took a photo of them and placed it next to the picture of their avatar. I couldn't find anything about surveys in the rules, but I'm new to secondlife so you're probably correct. I guess I could put up the 'results' (all 7 of them!) on a blog if you like? |

I think the basic premise for this survey, including most of the questions, is quite sound and I'm more likely to answer it than the last 43 or so that we've had here this month.
Certainly, how people perceive themselves and how they WANT to project themselves given ANY choice at all are extremely important when it comes to designing fashion. So what better place to check that out than SL, where we can wear anything we like? I can see how someone could learn from this and draw conclusions that would help them design real world clothing, or better respond to new trends. I was utterly surprised to find that, in SL, I am more and more drawn to 'punky' styles of attire and less and less interested in the ballgowns and big hair that originally filled my wardrobe. Who knew? I'd rather help someone out with this sort of project than answer intrusive questions about my social interactions inworld. B. _____________________

Hi Trillian. I sent you an IM in world with a URL to a blog discussion that you might find helpful for your project.
You may want to go User CP (upper left of your screen) and under edit options select enable private messageing so people here can contact you personally. Good luck with your project. ![]() _____________________

Trillian, if "Alter Egos" has already researched this in more depth than you can, why not just use the book as your reference material?
Use his data...but add your own insights and draw your own conclusions. _____________________

All one has to do is wander around SL to see how most people have idealized bodies or unrealistically skinny bodies. Ridiculously tall, unrealistically skinny. Knowing that very few people look like that in real life, and those that do are not here save Jenna Jameson for business purposes, I think you have all the answers you need without asking any questions.
