Here is a setting in the Network tab of the Preferences. It is called custom port connection. Is this for those with overactive firewalls that cannot get into Second Life without assigning SL to a specific open port? If I can get into SL with no problems, should I just leave this alone?

I've been kind of curious about this myself. But yes, I figured if it's not broke, don't fix it... So i haven't dared touch it.

The use I've heard of for the custom port is for when you have multiple computers on a router or other connection device sharing one internet connection.
Left in their default states, both systems will use the same port number when they talk to Second Life.
This can cause problems.
I believe this may be the cause of the triple repeat chat problem I saw a thread about here in the past few days.
So if you have such a problem, one of the computers should be changed to 13001 instead.
This might mean you might need to make some additional or different settings in your router so that it opens the ports properly.

I don't think your boss would be happy to see you waste valuable paid office time on SL Unless you own the firewall, if it is "overactive, there is usually a very good reason, the sysadmin set it up like this, the reason is usually "bandwidth saving/peer to peer apps" or productivity. But yeah i think it change the source port.

Your forum name is Gaybot, yet your file path clearly states Guybot... Just a curiosity...

I sometimes run 2 instrances of SL on my machine. One for my main account with the port set at 13000 and one for my alt with the port set for 13001. That way they don interfere with each other since thay are on different ports.

I don't know if I buy this explanation, I have run as many as 3 clients on the same computer, all with this setting untouched, with no issues.

From the Knowledge Base: "Custom Port Connection - Residents behind NAT devices often have confliction UDP ports. This setting allows you to specify a custom port. Second Life's priority order as far as port setting goes is as follows: *Use port number on command line if provided *Use port number in Preferences window if enabled *Use OS default" I'm behind a router that uses NAT and using different ports for each instance prevents the conflict mention in the Knowledge Base.

Ok, I guess I don't have a NAT, whatever that is. Maybe because I leave my screens up on the windows when they are open, and take the trash out regularly.
