Checking online status from the web

I would like to be able to check the online status without logging into SL. I know I can use the friends online option at secondlife.com, but I'd like to also know about some others who are not on my friends list. I have seen in-world programs to track the status of avatars beyond just your friends, and I'm wondering if there is such a program that could query without actually being logged in. I'm imagining the same approach ... load a list of avatar names (or id numbers) and it would query the db.

Is there such a thing? I've searched and not found it.

Thanks

I don't know Rube, maybe someone else does. But since my in-world 'avatars online' script broke somehow, I am also looking for another in-world script, without having to find out avi's UUIDs through a website. Any help appreciated, for online and offline solutions.

Some of those objects can be set to send you email when an avatar logs in and out.

My Online Monitor will send email or text message when the avatar signs in/out. There are others that do this, but...mine is the best :)

Not like stalking or tracking 24 hours a day. LOL. If I could add non-friends to the SL web option to see who's online, that would work for me. But 1) I can't add non-friends, and 2) the SL option doesn't always work.

So this program runs in-world and then IM's to me through email? Actually I am not looking for a minute to minute tracking. I'm just looking for something exactly like what SL offers through the website but that includes others besides friends. I'd like to call up the program or hit a web address and see who of my list is online at the moment. I have a number of people I interact with that are not on my friends list. I also have friends who have partners that are not on my list. If they are on together, I know my friend is probably tied up.

Simple, you are asking to see the online status of people who are not on your freinds list. People who have opted out of showing thier status to everyone.

So what makes you so special that you are saying basically "To hell with the system and what everyone else wants. I don't care what they want, I want to know if they are online whether they want me to know or not"?

I don't think so!

Just because it is possible does not mean it is allowed. These functions exist becuase there are lots of awesome ways they can be used in various products that do not violate people's privacy.

If you are just going to use it to track the status of people you shouldn't, then a simple abuse report will get disciplinary action against you.

I don't even want to track people who are *on* my friend's list.

I don't get it.

Well I must admit I don't get the reaction here. I'm not trying to track anyone. I'm just trying to see who's online just as I do with the SL website today. The online status of people is not a secret. It's right on their profile. There are lots of people I enjoy seeing regularly at Clubs and they enjoy chatting with me. We enjoy running into each other, but it would be stupid to have to put every one of those acquaintances on my friends list.

Guess my bottom line is forget I asked. The reaction is quite puzzling.

1) I think we have heard about too many cases of folks being stalked via these devices.

2) Why not add those folks to your friends list if you actually care enough to want to know when they are online or not?

FYI - Sometimes the reactions and postings in a thread are not specifically aimed back at you, but more just people's reactions to the topic in general.

Thanks for the note. I could add them to my friends list. As others have posted in other threads here, I sometimes find that my friends list gets cluttered up with a lot of casual acquaintances. I do wish there was something in between.

It really wasn't this big a deal. I just thought if there was an easy way to know, it would be useful.

Thanks again for the note. Appreciated.

You could always offer to exchange calling cards with these folks. It's a step between stranger and full-fledged friend, and the calling card will tell you if they are online or not. It's not accessable while offline so it's not the solution the OP was asking about, but it is a 'middle ground' between friend and not-friend.

Hi Rube. Don't you think that if I wanted you to know when I was online I'd let you know? Or don't you think that if I wanted you to know my status I'd add you to my friends list and keep the box checked that allows you to see when I'm online?

There is no reason for you to know when I'm online cause I'm not your friend. If I was your friend I still may have the box unchecked so you couldn't see me online. Why? Cause sometimes even a friend wants some privacy and will initiate a conversation if they so choose.

Of course I'm not your friend, nor do I really want to be. See I don't know you rube. And for me not knowing you I have no reason to know when your online. Mainly because I don't need to know when your online, cause I don't know you.

I could go in tighter circles here trying to explain to you how nosey your idea is anyway you choose to defend it. You don't need to know when everyone is online. You mentioned it wasn't to stalk or track people but it sounds like its exactly that.

Wow, 2+ years here and I didn't know this! :) I just know that when I'm on my underpowered laptop and using the 1.18 client, where instead of a friends list I have two waitings and a hippo, I can open my inventory and look at the calling cards to see who's online.

That's a good idea for online. Easier than having to pull up the profile. Thanks for that suggestion. I think calling cards are an under-used resource.

Some people check it in preferences so that *only people on their friend's list* can see if they are online or not. Also, if that is not checked, it is still usual to have to log in to SL yourself to see that. (Without the hack)

"Stupid," why?

Someone's suggestion about exchanging calling cards is a good one. But, why be surprised that some people like their privacy. Most here might assume that if someone wanted you to know their online status, they'd tell you.
