How do I get more prims on land? Can I purchase land in another sim and have those prims add to the amount of prims on my main parcel? Or do I have to own land in the same sim?
Any tricks to getting more prims or does SL happen to sell anything that will allow us to purchase 100 or so more prims?

Yep, more land in the same sim. You can shop around for land that has bonus prim allowances too, but you can't transfer those prims over if you don't want to move to another sim.

If you buy more land, it has to be in the same sim in order to increase your prim count.

Some rental places, especially on private sims, will segregate part of their sim and make it a park or empty lot in order to allocate higher prim counts to the existing residential parcels. You can expect to pay more for such parcels though.

You could get a temp rezzer to increase the number of prims on your land in an artificial way, but it won't make you many friends, because it burns the sim's resources all the same.

So when Bay City offers double prims does that mean that each bay city sim has half of it's land unused?

From: Bree Giffen So when Bay City offers double prims does that mean that each bay city sim has half of it's land unused? Yes that is true. Prim bonus is an estate setting. When set to, for example 2, Each parcel gets double prims, however if the total prim count in a sim is over 15000, random prims will start to be returned. Thats why you have to make sure some parcels are empty, to avoid going over the 15000 limit.

Why do you think so much of Bay City is pre-made as canals and roads and parks and "civic structures" like a lighthouse or a power plant or a warehouse? That is where the extra prim allocation comes from.

I guess when I was looking around it seemed there were more building plots than free space but I guess those roads and canals really add up.

It's just part of the normal land cycle as you outgrow land you move, plenty of it about very cheap at the moment and if you pack things right it won't be hard to put them out in the new place in similar layout. Much like RL when you realise you want to add another bedroom, a pool and double garage and they won't fit on the block. Many of us hate the out of prims message as much as we did when we started but now we know all the tricks to go back and be more effiecient with our builds to get around it, sculpties have helped a lot and a few megaprims often helps for floors & walls. Temp rezzing is just a way to cheat the system, I wouldn't be suprised if they are restricted some way in the future as there have been instances of people using them to put 200 prims on parcels that only support 3prims. They slow down the sim they are in and overwork it's engine.

Otherwise, people could exploit this limit, to get like 15500 prims e.g. It's simply not possible. I'm talking about normal sims, not openspace ones. Openspace have a hard build in limit of 3750 prims. From: Rudolph Ormsby You could get a temp rezzer to increase the number of prims on your land in an artificial way, but it won't make you many friends, because it burns the sim's resources all the same. Indeed, that is a way to gain more "prims" on your land. I say "prims" in quotes because they are not real prims, but ghost copies of real prims, they vanish after a minute. Keep in mind, that with temp rezzing the amount of "prims" to be rezzed should not go over the amount of prims your land(s) have in total. I'm talking about parcel primitive support, not the actual prims left. e.g. if you want to temp rez 4K prims on a parcel that supports only 3750 prims, you're in bad luck. till 3750 prims the temped objects work, flawlessly, the remaining prims will dissapear or not appear at all.

Not sure why it sucks. That's just the way it is.

Incidentally, one of the test sims at the IBM/Openlife project has been built to over 40,000 prims in one sim, so there is potentially hope for the future.

I guess it's just a limitation on the size of the servers harddrive or perhaps how ith controllling CPU is able to handle the resolutionn, perhaps in the future the groups of 4 or 16 on our servers might be joined into 1 sim 512x512 or 1024x1024 even.

I doubt that would be changed soon as it messes up the grid geometry, it doesn't only effect the sim but also the sims it borders with and the grid mapper, we are talking code that goes back to the first alpha of SL that most likely nobody has looked at in years. what we might see is quadripling of the prims upto 60k but it would mean the sim code has to start suporting multiple cores (multitreathing), those sims will offcourse cost 4 times what a regular sim costs: 4000 usd setup and 1200 usd tier judging by the price difference between regular sims and openspace sims.

Hi moo, thanks for confirming everything I said was true.. It sounds like you were trying to say I was wrong about something but then you just restated everything I said. Also currently there is a bug where when using prim bonus, it is possible to go over a sims 15000 limit, this can be devastating as instantly random prims will be returned from the sim until the prims in sim is at or below 15000. This is why it is necessary to design your parcels so that land owned by your tenants can not push the prims over. To do this you allocate parcels in your sim that will be used for little to no prims. It takes a bit of math but is easy once you have designed a few sims for rent like I have.
