Clothes don't keep their color.

Here, unlike the earlier questions I've asked, is a truly weird one. I have ten avatars in my inventory, and, as encouraged by the books, I mix up the clothes from them to dress up the avatar who will be going out. I have been doing this ever since I was born on February 1, but today, no matter what pants I put on the outgoer the pants in ten or so seconds change into the black leather ones. Those are the pants the avatar originally came with, but this has not happened before, and he really seems to enjoy the wardrobe change. I can't begin to conceive an explanation for this paranormal behavior.

And I'd like to put another question, unrelated to the above. How do I find, identify, a really good animator to make me an avatar if I decide to go that route? I have fed the terms "animator", "animators", "animations" to SL's search engine, and have googled several such terms. There's a swarm of people out there who profess to do this, but how do I find the really good one? One pal advises me that if I want a handsome, beautiful avatar I should ask in a local gay strip joint.

Finally, here is a llittle quote for those who have helped me so much:

I don't think you know what you're talking about.
Of course I don't. But what I say can still make sense.

As far as the switching back, try rebaking ctrl-alt-r. Also try clearing cache.

Not sure why you would want an animator to create an avitar. It sounds like you want to find new skin and play with your shape to get a good look. If you are looking for non human type avitars, check Grendel's Children, they have tons of very high quality and very reasonably priced avitars.

I know another new resident who had, well, exactly the same problem about a month ago, coincidentally it was right down to leather pants being the problem garment. Clear cache (under Edit->Preferences, Network Tab) didn't help, relogging didn't help, reinstalling didn't seem to help, nothing but doing it the hard way worked.

The hard way is to enable the Advanced menu with ctrl-alt-D, then use advanced->Character->Character Tests->Test Male (or Female). This resets *all* your worn items to generic defaults, so before you try this you'll want to open your inventory, and make a note of everything that shows up in a search for '(worn' and the folders they are in, so you can put your avatar back to your normal self when you are done with this. Why those baked leather pants were so persistent is a mystery, but it may have had something to do with the fact that the guy said he was sloshed at the time.

As for the clothes....I think you got the right advice.....but 'animator'? Not sure what you mean....if you just want a good looking avatar....that's not too difficult. I can easily help you with that.....but it's very late right now and I'm off to bed.......however...IM me in-world and I'd be happy to help you achieve the look you want. ;)
(an animator would be someone in SL who creates poses and animation overrides...or dance animations....but I think that's not quite what you're looking for correct? You want an avatar....anyway...I'm sure i can help)

Apples and oranges, friend.

An "avatar" is made up of a Shape, a Skin, any clothing layers it may wear, any attachments it may have, and any animations it may use.

The Shape is made up of a bunch of polygons that can be stretched and contorted using the slider values in Edit Appearance. You can make your own Shape, buy one, or use those in your Library.

The Skin goes over the Shape to give it color, shading, and definition. You can buy skins, or use the ones in the Library.

Like the Skin, clothes are layers that are stacked on the Shape. All these layers are then "baked" together by the client (your computer), sent to the Linden Lab server so that it can send this info out to everyone else, and then sent back to your client. That's why you see your avatar blurring, stabilizing, and blurring again before finally stabilizing.

Attachments are stuff like shields, swords, earrings, necklaces, tails, etc that are actual prims. These prims attach to different parts of the Shape. You'll see lots of furries with many attachments, especially heads, paws and tails.

Animations are short files that you can make your avatar run to do a specific action, like "sexy walk", "push-up", "fly", etc. To make your avatar run an animation, you can click on it from the Inventory and run it that way, or you can pack the animation into a prim, and attach the prim to your avatar. Lots of people have an entire set of animations that they use for their avatar to look and act a specific way; this is called an Animation Overrider and has a script that tells the avatar what animation to play when.

So to get a new look for your own avatar, you can change any or all of the above parameters. Some places, like the above-mentioned Grendel's Children, sells ENTIRE avatars, usually non-human. I have a dragon avatar, a crow, a mechanical spider, a jellyfish, etc avatars from Grendel's Children. These avatars change virtually everything about the base avatar, from shape, to skin, to attachments, animations, clothing layers, etc.

:) Hope that helps

Try washing in cold water.

Ok, I had to come back in and answer part of this seriously:

From: someone
How do I find, identify, a really good animator to make me an avatar if I decide to go that route?

What type of avatar? Search that type. Or search 'shapes'. If you just want a good-looking human avatar, I can point you to either a free place or names of some expensive places. Heck if you catch me in SL and I am bored enough I will go with you, and help you with a makeover. No strings.

Be more specific.

I have the exact opposite problem... I can't seem to keep my leather pants ON me when I'm sloshed. :p
