Is my lag problem an SL problem, and not me?

Seems like EVERYONE, even people with massively intense gaming systems, are having problems with lag in Sl that are worse than usual lately.

Inability to TP. Rezzing takes forever. Chat lag like crazy.

I just got a new system, and I think I need a new graphics card /327/a8/307910/1.html#post2327883 . But I'm starting to think these problems aren't necessarily related to my system, but to SL itself.

What do others think/know about this?

I don't have any factual evidence to point to, but things *feel* laggier lately. My regions seem to have a lower-than-usual physics fps and lower-than-usual time dilation. Textures seem to be slower to rez, and I have noticed texture lag even when using an old browser (1.18.6) that predates the current texture bugs/flaws in the current browser. And I have noticed especially in group chat, a lot of chat lag, and some repeated/duplicated chat.

Just in general, overall, things *feel* slower, but I don't have hard figures to back that up.

SL has never been better for me lag wise actually. I get incredible high FPS everywhere I go.Though that is due to my new beast of a computer and not SL itself.

Though I am plagued with other problems at times now that are graphic card related.:(

I think the only way to tell where the lag is coming from is to watch the Stat window.
Ctrl Shift 1 i think.

By watching the viewers fps, ping, sim td and sim fps you can make lots of fun assumptions. =)

In a healthy sim/grid... Sim td and fps should be stable and as close to 1.0 and 45 as possible. If these are fluctuating the region is working hard and *could* create lag you can feel.

If your viewer fps are low and ping is large the lag could be coming from your end. Either puter or network related.

Some of your lag issues may be server side, but your video card sucks, and is definitely a significant part of your problem.

I have precisely the same experience. Things seem to load just a tad bit slower every week.

And I expect that to happen. I know Second Life waits for no computer, and if I'm not constantly updating my computer, the constant Second Life updates are going to slow me down. With the exception of some OS optimization, I'm using essentially the same computer I started here with two years ago.

I've run into occasional issues, just enough to stand out, but nothing severe yet.

The past couple days I've noticed things have 'seemed' laggier for me. Normally I have very little problem tho I do tend to stay away from really prim cluttered areas or busy mainland locals....but over all my isuues with SL are less then what I read about.
But....last couple days....things seem to be loading really slowly no matter where I am.....and I've had some TP issues.....and today.....crashing like crazy.....which I'm thinking might have to do with the rolling upgrades going on.
I usually just wait it out.....it has always smoothed over for me after a bit......and it also snaps me back to reality because if SL becomes so important to me that I can't just go find something else to occupy my time....then I need to re-evaluate my priorities....

....or I just need to go into the forums and see what's going on in here....hehe :p

I've been noticing it as well and my system rocks low fps lag spikes even on sims that have never been laggy.

No its not my isp I've pinged to make sure lol

Seems to me the terrain is loading slowly, with the terrain geometry loading slowly, such that you see each square of land appearing, in a very immersion destroying way, and then the terrain textures appear slowly, one square at a time. Not good at all.

Textures are remaining gray a long time, regardless of which viewer I use, and sculpties are taking a long time to load.

I'm seeing a lot of bright blue, such as large areas where water should be displayed, displaying as bright uniform blue, apparently connected with crossing sim borders.

Group chat breaks often on Mental Mentors, with the "unable to send message, try later" message, where it then later sends the message after telling you it couldn't.

Chat lag is high, for weeks, with chat being unusable for sensible conversation at times.

Sim border crossing are failing more often than normal.

I don't know what the cause is, but flying around SL is not much fun these days owing to this poor performance.

im thinking it may also be due to the work theyare carrying out this week...(at least i HOPE so) copied this from the grid report page

"This week we will be doing some major upgrades to the servers we run the grid on. This will require a rolling restart of the entire grid, but it will go much slower than usual, so we have elected to break it up over several days."

This week looks to be a bit of a lagfest all round - hurrah.

The only thing I have the biggest problem with, really, is the rezzing delay. There's no rhyme or reason to which items will rez quickly and which will not. Just yesterday I TP'd to a large-ish building that used to rez almost immediately; yesterday, it rezzed about a quarter of the way, and then just stopped. After about four minutes(!) the rest of it finally rezzed, suddenly in very rapid succession. On the other hand places like the SS Galaxy, which have thousands and thousands of prims, rez very quickly for me, for some reason. Weird.

Another thing is scripted HUD items. I have a radar, for instance, that I occasionally use; however, it seems that any sim I go to which has more than three other people on it, if I attach the HUD it takes forever to rez. I usually go home and attach it (and it usually rezzes immediately), and then TP back to wherever-it-was I wanted to go.

I am noticing the texture issues, slow rezzing or never rezzing textures, even in non-laggy areas like my home SIM. Also, weird "drop-offs"

Last night, for example, I "crashed" while sitting and chatting with 2 other avis. The weird thing is that I didn't even know I had crashed until I tried to type something in the chat... nothing... could still see my friends chatting though and could cam around, hear background sounds... tried again to add my 2ยข, nothing... I noticed that the location bar said "unknown" ... weird... so I "quit" and relogged.

I have also been unceremoniously crashed (window just disappears, no lag, no warning...) only to get the message that the region is "beginning the log out process" when I try to log back in... Isn't there supposed to be a warning?

This seems to be new behaviors, at least for me, I am used to lagging and crashing but not instant oblivion when I go to "edit" something...
