I will shortly be introducing a friend of mine to Second Life. She's an academic, and will be most interested in locations in SL that are related to the teaching of art (especially drawing and cartooning) and the teaching of writing. I would be most grateful for any suggestions anyone might have of locations we could visit.

This is mostly a *bump* because I sure don't know of any examples myself. But it sounds like a very interesting project (especially the drawing part) so if nobody is doing it now, somebody should. If you're not getting suggestions, I'd try contacting one of the educator groups in-world, or perhaps Pathfinder Linden or Fleep Tuque who have active contact with lots of educational endeavors in-world.

Sounds fascinating- the drawing part at least- But, how does one teach writing? I am trying to visualize if this could mean calligraphy or spelling or what exactly.

You may want to refer your friend to this place. It belongs to an Italian friend of mine and he was thinking of having classrooms sessions teaching RL topics. Please contact me in-world and I will get you hooked up with him (he's partial owner). Good luck!

As artist learning stuff the closest I have seen to any tips on how to draw or educational stuff around drawing is in texture forum.
There are few writers workshops for plays that this one guy for whatever reason has escaped me. _____________________

Seems to me that SL is one huge cartoon/drawing constantly evolving along with a written storyline and dialogue.
So, one thought is it is a new medium for drawing and writing. Another thought is that learners could conceptualize drawings, and then realize them in SL. As for writing, how about assignments like spend x hours in location Y and then write a story based on what you see. All the usual writing topics, first/second/third person, etc etc etc would apply. But it might be interesting to have a group of students writing stories based on the "same" experience, e.g. Greenies Home, or Gardens of Apollo, or Ahearn Noob Hell. A lot of writing is sort of like flying your camera in and spying on people. It is easy for me to see a lot of good discussions of writing based on SL activities. _____________________

Kraight, you can email me at lee.ponzu@gmail.com. I will forward your inquiry to a friend of mine who is a writer in SL.
Also, you should Google for Educators in SL, such as SLED. There are several active groups talking a lot about this kind of stuff. _____________________

Ooh, I've just started looking around in RL for some sort of art lessons. It would be great if there was something like that inworld.
I imagine it would be difficult because you couldn't see the sketching/painting happening in real time, and would have to pay to upload work in the form of textures, but a clever teacher may have already come up with a way to overcome these obstacles. If there are classes like this, I would be interested too. _____________________
