I'm sure this has come up before but I haven't seen it...

I did my occasional pop over to Orientation Island this evening and it seemsthings get worse and worse. Plenty of crazy avs hanging around to pester and confuse the newbies. I see this on the Help Islands also. Is it any wonder so many people never make it past that point?

I'm not in favor a police force in SL, but I'd think there'd be some in these areas. Either staff always on duty or a volunteer security squad trained to deal with these low end griefers. It's confusing enough for new people who aren't use to gaming but add others whose sole purpose is to make you miserable and it's a disaster.

Once they get through these checkpoints then they'd on your own. You normally wouldn't experience so much self crated chaos in one small area in world anyway. But while going through the steps and getting their feet wet let's give these guys a break.

Has this been tried?

You mean Orientation/help island public don't you? Other then noobs and Lindens And or Noob Lindens you will only find mentors on the OI/HI's. As for the public versions of those places. Anyone can go there. Everyone is welcome there. Even the freaks in the crazy pestering outfits.

I thought orientation island and help island weren't accessible once you had left them, so that only new sign ups would be there?

Did this change?

Some things never change. Oh the time does but the same people playing games with newbies and alts posing as newbies saying " HEY i want to see you naked" just gets old. OI Help Island at times is worse then the welcome areas.

Yes, I agree. I was not referring to the SL vigilante groups. I'm suggesting an organized security force by the Lindens to prevent havoc being thrust upon the noobs. If I experienced much of what I see going on I am certain I would have said "To hell with this load of crap" and logged off without ever realizing how much SL has to offer.

There is the New and Improved OI, which has a bunch of checkpoints that give you "stars" for each task you complete. Once you complete all the learning tasks, you get a "key" to get off the island. Only newbies and Lindens (and mentors, maybe?) are allowed on the New OI.

The old old OI, the one with the "corral" for incoming TP's and the little garden path leading from station to rustic station, is now open to all residents. That's how griefers are showing up to hassle newbies who get confused and try to TP back to the new OI, and end up at the old OI. It's all very confusing to the typical newbie, I would think.

That's exactly where I was.

I've also found the same thing occuring at the "welcome centers" or whatever they are called. I'm not in world so I can't verify what they're called. It's those drop off points for when the newbies leave Orientation Island.

They need a good network of Mentors/Helpers and direct IM access for them to any Lindens online, solved, but apparently too complicated for LL to implement.
They could have an extra 100 manhours of people patrolling inworld for free, without granting them anymore [owers than just direct communication to a Lindens online group. Well over half the problems could be solved by the mentors themselves without bothering Linden staff.

I'm all for more Lindens being hired. With the growth of SL and the rising numbers of residents, the rate of Lindens per general population is far too low. Some kind of monitoring of the Orientation Islands and Help Islands would encourage new residents to stay and give SL a real try. Annoying avies(aka Griefers)most certainly gives the worst impression of SL at OI and Help Island. No business can afford bad press or bad word of mouth.
