Why am I getting Region Reboot?

My RL partner and I sit next to each other in RL and play SL. Many times we have been at the same location in SL and only one of us gets the dreaded "You've been logged off due to region reboot" and the other will be just fine and dandy..

What's going on here??

Obviously it can't be true.

Could be a connection issue, are you both using the same router?

It's conceivable that you need to specify a port for Second Life to distinguish your multiple instances of SL from each other.

This is described at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Client_parameters

To try this, you add:

--port 13001

to the target field of the shortcut you use to start Second Life.

From: the wiki
Set the TCP port for the client; useful to run multiple instances of SL on the same local home network. Values that may work: 13000 and 13001 (Valid numbers are 13000 to 13050)

This is purely conjecture on my part.

I have often wondered if the error messages I get about region problems with a forced shutdown are accurate.

It might be one or two dashes in front of port, -port or --port, I'm not sure how you know in advance whether to use one or two dashes. The wiki shows two dashes.

Odd - when my husband was in SL, neither of us ever had to specially set any port numbers and we were always logged on at the same time

From 2003 to 2005 SL was notorious for not allowing couples on the same router to play SL without continuously knocking one of them off.

But that was supposedly fixed years ago, and it was often intermittent and did not affect all couples on the same router, just quite a few.
