(Always apologetic for not finding what I want in Searches) I'm trying to help out some new guys, and they got me in a corner: How do you find (for the purpose of establishing new home landmark) usable info hubs, or welcome stations, or whatever else that would work? I own land, but cannot provide home due to SIM owner (I think). I know of New Citizens, Hobo (something). Ahern, Waterhead, etc. Is there a way to find this kind of hub in relation to a specified SIM? Does it have to be on mainland? SL search has worn me down, SL help online-- same, Google-- same.

Anything Mainland that is owned by Linden Lab ought to do. You won't find anything off the Mainland.

Any mainland infohub should allow you to set home there. There has been bugs that prevent it and I think those bugs are still not ironed out so there may be some hubs that still don't allow it. Of course every new resident arrives on the mainland with home already set to the first infohub they arrive at.
NCI definitely allows residents to set home there (if they join the relevent group) and to the best of my knowledge The Shelter and Furnation also do the same. In all such cases the resident would have to belong to a particular group.
If you rent land you may (not always) be able to set home there too.
I don't think theres an easy way to find such land, except by searching Places for infohubs, or by word-of-mouth. Any non-infohub land would be due to belonging to a certain group, so if the resident belongs to any groups they could always just experiment by attempting to set home to land belonging to those groups, and see if it works.

Places tab, pick Linden Location from the drop down. Search terms to try: infohub, welcome, and even Linden - they aren't named consistently, and not all things identified as welcome areas or infohubs are really that at present. Plan B: Pull up the map, uncheck everything except for infohubs, zoom way out and wait, then go button pushing. Home can be changed to a different infohub at any time, so there's no real consequence to choosing a sucky one on the first try.

I have long time ago split off a small section of my land, and put that in a different group, for the sole purpose of giving a home loaction to the homeless. Members of the Gnoma Information Group can set their home there. Up till now I invited members, but I will change that so that everybody can find the group in search and join if they want. Unfortunately SL seems very bad now, so it'll have to wait till tomorrow.

For years I refused to change my default home location since it always gave me a different place to login to if things went wonky. Now that we can log in to any sim we can name I honestly would find a linden open water sim. Better odds of a successful login in rough times.

From: Rmike Javelin ... I own land, but cannot provide home due to SIM owner (I think)... Contact the sim owner. It is not reasonable that he should not allow his tenants to set their home locations to their...homes. Meanwhile, if you need a home location, go to GQ Start in Zugspitze. You can Set Home there.

I used to allow new residents to set their home to my skybox but I just realized I moved that skybox several hundred meters higher. Apologies to them and anyone bonked on the head by falling noobs.

The infohub in the Bear sim is quite nice.

First off, talk with your sim owner about providing you with a home location that is actually at your home. There are a number of good infohubs out there. Some of the ones I know of... 1. Ahern. The biggie. Always very crowded and "colorful." Great location, but the traffic might make it a rough spot to log in. 2. Waterhead. Also very popular and well located. But also highly trafficked, and somewhat dangerous at times. 3. Bear. Attractive and smaller, but the source of some controversy. I'd recommend elsewhere. 4. Isabel. Not bad. Can be busy, but not overly so. 5. Braunworth. Not very busy. I'd probably use this one if I needed an infohub nowadays. 6. Hyles. Nice looking (for a swamp) and not too busy. This would be a second choice for me. 7. Plum. An old SL style infohub. Not a bad one. Adjoining a sandbox, which could make for some "interesting times." Third choice. 8. Nova Albion. Actually in the middle of the Nova Albion sims. Not bad, but like some others, it's pretty busy and chaotic. There are many others (look for them in the map in the lower portion of your screen, click "Map" and look for the infohub icons): these are the ones I know well enough to say anythign about
