Help connecting please!!

I am new to SL as of today. I downloaded the SL program at work today and it worked just fine. When I got home I tried to use it on my home computer and I got an error message (below) when trying to log on. I installed the program on my husband's computer and it logs in just fine but his computer is also unbearably slow. Can someone help me with this error message?

When it gets to "waiting for region handshake..." it stalls and says Unable to connect. Login packet never received by login server. Please try again in a few minutes, or click Help for advice and a link to the system status web page.

I have been trying to fix this problem for a couple of hours now and I am getting no where! I use to have a firewall installed on my computer but it hasn't been on for months now. What could be wrong??

Assuming your hardware is compatible and you've already checked your net connections, I would say the problem may be on LL's end.

I'd say delete the downloaded programme from SL, download a fresh copy on the computer you want to use and try from scratch again.

Considering the current state of LL's internal connectivity, you may well have success loggin in to another sim.

Preferences button, general tab, start location. Regions I'm having least trouble getting in to:

Uli, Caldbeck, Seatallan, Keswick

Assuming you use Windows XP - did you check the settings of the internal Windows firewall? That one may still be active. Any other security software? If it logs in on another computer but not this one, it does sound like some proggie blocking access.
