I'm wondering how much the average freelance scripter charges in SL. If you make your SL living from scripting, how much do you usually charge? Or if you recently bought custom scripts, how much did they cost?

custom? prices range from free to friends for small stuff to ~$40/hr... depending on mood and workload.
translation: it always depends on what you want, how interested the scripter is, and what the terms are of the resulting product (sole full perms to you = higher prices, etc). ps Don't bother asking me right now I can't even get my isp to play nice with SL _____________________

I have paid rel world prices (ie $40 US an hour) for certain scripts. It depends on the complexity and the agreement with the scriptor

Most scripters worth the title will charge you at least the typical RL minimum wage that apply in their country.

Yeah, RL rates if you want sole full-perms. Even then I won't support any scripts modded by other people except for a further fee. Just can't tell what they'll do to them.
It's cheaper for scripts where you want copy+trans to use them in your own builds but don't want sole rights - that is, I can sell the same script(s) to another customer as well. Depends on the likely demand and how well they fit with whatever else I'm doing. If it's something I want to do, you don't want sole rights to, it fits with my schedile and I think I have good re-sale options I might quote a price < L$1,000 for the whole thing. As Void said, there's lots of considerations. |

$40, not 40 Lindens? And I did mean full perm scripts. yup, up to 40$US for serious custom work, where buyer retains full permissions and exclusive product rights for at least 6 mos or until a similar product hits market. but I don't do a lot of those jobs, I often retain rights to market or further develop a concept, offer discounts for ideas and concepts that really interest me or that I feel will be useful to me later, and further discounts for quick stuff, simple conversions of stuff I already have done, and personal friendship (call it a wholesale discount, or the equivalent of corporate entertainment budget) you can find some scripting stuff quite cheap, from casual hobbyist types, and that's all good.... most of my business falls into that category really (I do more work that I enjoy than I profit from really) but the terms on those things are usually pretty fast and loose. you recieve a script that does what you said, they get paid, and any other terms are left up in the air, and if it breaks next week... well you're screwed. _____________________

The take-away from all this is that it pays to be friends with a scripter.
And that pays perhaps better than you thought. ![]() |

keep in mind that US$40/hr is really cheap for real life work.

keep in mind that US$40/hr is really cheap for real life work. Yeah, I was thinking that too. I never took a contract below say, 10k minimum and 50/hr, and that's the cheap hungry when I needed money kinda stuff. Of course for the main grid here, when I do any code it's either for free, or not at all. And it's never for big efforts. Quit doing it when I got busy with land. _____________________
