Are there ways to earn Linden Dollars for free in Second Life?

Someone told me that if you stand in one spot for a long time and repeat a gesture over and over again you can earn Linden Dollars. Is that true?

What are some other ways?

Look up Camping in Search. Also, if you don't mind being spammed, I think you can give you email address out and take a lot of surveys.

Honestly it is usually easier to just buy a few L$.

I would HIGHLY recommend against this - it is not true and will only irritate people around you.

Camping chairs... Sit in one and get paid a pitiful handful of L$ that amounts to less value than it costs you for the electricity to operate your computer.

Standing in one spot and repeating a gesture? No, they were pulling your leg there. That will just piss people off.

Best way to get L$? Buy them with your credit card. Or earn them by learning a valued skill in SL and selling goods or services.

Do a search for places that have money trees - there are basically two kinds, Wolfhaven and Bravo Bravo. New residents can pick money from the trees, although some are restricted to people who have payment info on file.

Where do I find a camping chair?

Also, I am brand new to SL. How do I search for money trees?

.... just free clothes.

If you're looking to do SL on a budget, start spending a lot of time looking for freebies and stop worrying about getting Lindens. Don't just go to the Freebie places, though - a lot of better stores will have one or two free items to entice people in. Join a group like Fashion Consolidated - you will often get announcements of freebies available. Lucky Chairs can also be a great way to get free stuff.

You can also find free hair, skins, and all sorts of things!

With Camping you will be wasting a lot of time sitting around making peanuts - certainly not enough to do anything useful in SL.

Welcome to Second Life!

Camping chairs are a scripted item that someone who owns a parcel will place on their land, such as in a club or mall that they own. The money they pay out comes from the funds that the owner of the chair has. They are paying you to make their place look more popular than it really is, so people se more green dots on the map and are fooled into thinking "Oh! There's a busy, active spot. It must be a great place to go.", and then they teleport there and find 30 people sitting like zombies in chairs, doing nothing, saying nothing, and getting paid pennies an hour to fool people into going to the store. You find such places by entering the term "Camping" in search.

Money trees are a little different. Still owned by the land owner, and the money they pay comes directly from the land-owner's account. they are usually restricted so they can only be used by a newbie less than 30 days after their first entry into SL. They require a certain degree of coordination and camera control skills to locate L$ prims that appear at random among the branches of the tree. Clicking this money removes it from the tree and credits your account with that amount. Unlike camping, money trees require active, intentional interaction by the newbie, and actually teach good navigation and camera control skills. You don't see them very often any more though, because greedy people would create new accounts just to raid those trees.

They're scattered all about the world. Just type camping in the search window.

But better yet, do as Kalderi suggests and just go shopping for freebies. You'll enjoy that more.

And disregard clowns telling you about standing around making gestures.

I usually just buy about $10.00 US dollars per month of $L and that's plenty. No sitting around doing nothing. But take your time, take advantage of free things until you get to know the world.

Word. You're spending more in RL electricity to power your computer than you'd make in a camping chair. Just buy a couple and actually be a part of the SL economy.

Sometimes MacDonalds gives camping chairs away with Happy Meals.

I remembered camping when I was brand new.. Was all excited about getting like L$50 for only an hour or 2 of work until I did the math.

Falkor, while you're camping and collecting some L$, keep in mind that you can buy L$260 for US$1.

If you do end up buying L$, NEVER EVER!!, buy them on eBay. Make sure to only get them from approved places like here at this website or slexchange.

This only works if it's a very elaborate gesture.

But to be safe, you'll want to get the money up-front. (I've heard that a webcam also helps.)

If you don't want to sit camping for very little money, I would suggest you do surveys. But make sure you have a separate email account to provide, otherwise you'll get inundated with spam.

This is the way I earned money in the beginning and I had a pretty substantial amount by the time I was done.

All that being said, there are some good freebies out there, but not all that many for men which can be frustrating.

One way for men to make a little spending money is to check out the costume competitions at clubs. Look in events for "best in something or other", make at least a token attempt at dressing to the theme (some will be difficult to do with freebies, but certainly at least you can do the color themes), and hang out and talk to people for a couple of hours. It's often the case that only one man enters so he wins by default; just make sure that the club has separate male and female contests. Prizes range anywhere from L$100 to L$500; the biggest amounts are at large clubs where there will be more competition, so your best chances will be for the L$250 and under prizes. And you'll get to spend a couple of hours chatting with beautiful women :)

Note, this is a MUCH harder way for women to make money. More women show up at clubs and play the game so you'll actually need to have good outfits or be very popular or both. Unless your closets are already well stocked you'll spend more money preparing for the contests than you can win.
