ive noticed lately when i have my graphics up high for taking photos etc...i get these weird flickering lights , mostly at sunset..im still using the 19.04 viewer...someone told me it was something they altered in the windlight thats effected it..and it seems a few people are suffering from these random flashes of light & flickering...its pretty annoying really.

anyone have it or know how to stop it? I played around with the settings for ages...didnt budge :(

Windlight seems to have cut down on the number of lights rendering, from six all the way down to two. Disabling some of the shaders can help at the cost of the Windlight effects.

There's a JIRA, but it's jes way too early inna mornin!

Eh? (O.o) It's still eight... Minus the sun and the moon. (o.o)

I do a lot of experiments with lights and teach a light properties class. If you're seeing flickering, it could be that you're in a location with most of the lights used up already or someone in the crowd around you is wearing facelinghts. Some people will wear all six or more. (^_^)y

I've a JIRA issue on unknown flicker, though I've identified a couple of specific cases as well:
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3248

One of these cases is where an object who's light is updated will often have its light "turned off" briefly in favour of other nearby lights, during the update:

Tested it a couple weeks ago with a friend, then later with Andrew Linden. It's definitely causing an issue with number of lights rendering. See also http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-6116

Yes, this explains something I've noticed when using a facelight for my vendor image shoots. It seemed like only two of the face lights were rendering at all and I was only using 4.

Well, now I know to just remove two of the lights, so I know that the ones I really need will render....

I wonder if this flickering is related to the flickering I see when I am applying textures

ya know when you apply textures the prim gets that circle with an x in it to show which face is selected... well that white circle flashes when I select faces of a prim to texture... (or when entire prim is selected)

when applying textures to prims it is annoying to say the least

That's why I started living without the Windlight sky and water.

having 6 lights, is more important to me, than pretty clouds.

This may be something that only affects some video cards.. or some installs of OpenGL or something. Windows XP here.

If you'd check the Jira, you'd see that it's not affecting everyone.

I know, I saw that, and noticed another report of success on Linux there. But okay, I gather we're not trying to figure out what combination of evil spirits makes it fail. Never mind.

The only flickering I've seen is from other people's facelights. :( As they spin, dance or turn, their facelight moves farther away than others and shuts off, so that half of the room goes back to looking normal, then washes out brightly when their light comes around again.

It was totally headache inducing once, so I turned off local lights entirely until that person left thankfully! Sadly dancing indoors with sunglasses doesn't help that problem, LOL

Luckily I haven't seen the issues in those Jiras, but I don't believe any of my candles or fireplace have scripted lights.

But, I can say, ever since I've turned off render attached lights in the new RC? No more facelights! :D YAY! Nobody looks horribly washed out, flat and cartoony anymore. They don't have that big bright glow surrounding them, and the whole room doesn't go brightly "nova" when they TP in, LOL

And also, I haven't seen any light flickering since. ;)

Maybe try turning off local lights or turning off attached lights if you use the newest RC viewer?

Sorry, the way you said it and the way other in this thread have reacted, kind of felt like "well I'm not seeing it, so it doesn't exist."

is there a feature request for making the lighting more controlled? like sensors, you can change the arc, why can't it be done with lights? with that in mind, how come we can't see the radius of a sensor the way we can with a light source?

I seem to get the flickering lights in v-1.21.0 and up. This mostly occurs on me when I have the viewer minimized(not full screen mode). Tends to flicker more on the right side of my viewer. When I maximize back to full screen it usually stops . The lights even reflect off of prims which makes it confusing. I start looking around to see who is doing it lol. Can be annoying at times

Dramatic demo! I voted for the jira after looking back through the system specs in the comments. It's a small sample size, but as you note in the YouTube comment, it seems to affect XP with nVidia cards, and Macs with ATI (and apparently not Linux with nVidia--I no longer have an ATI card I can get working on Linux to test). Scary that this particular bug has been through so many viewer iterations without getting assigned.
