no, this post isnt about how to disable it, i already know that.
what i would like to know is if its possible to use this feature without being logged off SL.
having it disabled via the debug menu (auto-away) and setting "Set Away" manually from the top toolbar, World > Set Away, still logs you out of SL after 30 minutes.
it sure would be nice to use this since im always logged on SL, but not always here.
better yet, id prefer LL remove the logout after 30 minutes of inactivity all together but still allow the indicator to show an avatar is away.

There are tools that will keep you logged in - I'm not entirely certain if they will show you Away or not...

Have you tried using Busy instead of Away?
Or is there some reason you'd not want to be shown as Busy?

(dagnabbit...3Ring beat me to it)

Isn't the only thing that actually setting Away does is put the little away message over your head and make you drop your head in a dorky way? If you are just wanting to get an Away message above your head, wear an object that displays a title. Or if you are owner in your own group, create yourself a special title and activate that group title when you are away.

that is a great idea and i have already done what you have suggested (except using a group for that purpose), but it would still be nice to have something display it automatically after a set time (that time can be changed in the debug).
using busy is also a good idea, but its the principle behind "away" that i like.
the same way AOL Instant messenger works.

I know nothing about scripting, so this may not be possible: Could you put a script in that object that detects being idle and after you have been idle for xx amount of time, it then shows the title?

i havent yet evaluated that option as of yet, but i dont think there is a current method to detecting whether an avatar is AFK, but i do believe there is a method to detecting whether an avatar is moving and that option could be used in a script with timer functions to change hover text (script areas permitting) to AFK/blank.
