Spam from a Bot (UUIDs)

heyas;

does anybody know what this is? i will avoid posting any actual text, but i have heard of this happening to one other person... being apparently randomly spammed by a bot spouting UUIDs.

so...

i opened a group chat and said "im bored."

i then got an instant message (private, not group) from an apparent bot, saying 'name lookup for bored failed.'

i thought...??? maybe somebody trying to be funny.

the next thing i know... this thing is spouting out names of groups, names of objects, names of apparent things for sale.... and their corresponding UUIDs.

this person/bot is a member of the group i chatted in. apparently (this is all wild speculation here!) it got the group im, and the word "I'm" with no apostrophe is a command it recognizes to... 'im' me with info on whatever other word i say.

so the question to you knowledgeable forum-hangers-on... :X any idea what it is? IS it a copy bot? is snatching object uuid's a form of evil mischief? (you can't do anything with them that i, law-abiding citizen that i am, know of.) or is it some sort of personal search servant? what the heck??

i AR'd it. but i noticed it was part of a group of someone i know whose products were stolen once... so i'm wondering if i should be paranoid and tell this person i know to ban this bot.

what do you guys think?

There was a bot hanging around infohubs that was operating as a sort of portable freebie shop, and it used IMs for search commands. the one I saw did have an explanation for what it was tying to do in its profile. I wonder if this was an attempt to do the same thing, but borked.

This happened to a couple of people in a large store group I'm a member of. The store's owner opened group chat and asked if anyone else had received the same message. The UUIDs included the names of some pretty expensive items, such as Redgrave skins. Nobody could figure out what was going on, save the possibility of a screwed-up Copybot or something similar.

Sounds like a group bot that is not programmed correctly. "IM bored" is the command to send an instant message to bored. You can try sending it "help"and get all the commands it respond to and have fun with it. You can have it send you all it's money and inventory too.

I think most store owners would appreciate the information. They can decide what to do next.
