Ok, so I cannot stand when people spam up a group chat and sometimes I'll feel like telling them to shut up.

But I can't.

Each and every time I try to use Group Chat on this client and the older one, I always get the Chat error where it takes awhile for me to post. By then, everyone's usually quiet and I get kicked due to lag -.-;

What's causing this, something I'm doing or just lovely SL lag?

Group chat has been screwed up for a long time.

If it's your group, just remove the spammers. Otherwise, it might be kind to allow a group chat channel to be used for... Um... group chat and you can simply close the tab (The second, smaller "X";) if you don't want to participate. (^_^)

I'm a member of a couple Q&A chat groups. Discussions are allowed. But there's always someone who just can't stand being chatted to in group. That someone is usually someone best removed from the group for their own sake and ours. (=_=)

Telling people off is, at best, a great way to be ejected from a group. Really... Annoying spammy group chat = annoying spamming group. You're not forced to stay. There are probably other, much more interesting groups out there. (^_^)y

Depending on th Group, your comment may not be welcome- what does the Group Owner say? Usually groups have clear definitions such as, "This Group is For Announcements Only- Please do not Chat". That is for the owner of the group to decide- please ignore my rant if this is the case - but I am one of the ones that would calmly tell self appointed Chat Police what to do with themselves they try that on an unregulated Group.

Many groups are for Chatting- others are for announcements only and you would have to check each individually for the rules.

I agree with you but I think a lot of folks get hung up on the definition of Spam and love to throw the word around. By definition:

*Spamming is the abuse of electronic messaging systems to indiscriminately send unsolicited bulk messages.*

I have a very chatty Shoe Group I like to think of as my Shoe Community. I must admit that I instigate sometimes which can lead to an hour long chat session. A lot of times, we discuss shoe builds and ideas and of course, like any large group, the chat ventures off into oblivion and beyond. I had a 3 month old(LoL) start pitching a fit that everyone was spamming the group. Well, I had to explain to her what the definition of the word meant and she insisted that she was logging the chat and was going to AR the group. When I booted her, she showed up at the store asking me *who the hell I was* -- When I said I was the *explicative* owner -- she proceeded to tell me what groups were for.......LMFAO. And of course, she was going to ruin my business, spread the word around SL, blah blah blah blah.

Right Click........Buh Bye. Do not pass Go, Do not collect 200L

Lets get this straight. When you join a group, its an 'Opt In' elective that you choose. You should read the group charters to read the rules of engagement. In the same respect, you are given the opportunity to 'Opt Out' at any time. My Group charter clearly states that we are an active group. If you don't like it............leave. 'Opt In' is perfectly legal in every instance and is a perfectly credible form of getting sales information, specials, and relaying news and events.........and even chatting if it is allowed. True *Spammers* are dealt with quickly and very publicly. We police our own. There have been several instances of spamming where the Spammer has received lots of Instant Messages after they throw out their *free skins at this Slurl* BS message.

In the same respect, while it may even be annoying......merchants do use Invite systems and notecard givers, etc. when you arrive on THEIR property. While I am not going argue who owns property in Secondlife because that is arbitrary; Merchants can use whatever means to advertise their products on their property. It is their name on 'About Land.' Just like real retail stores, you are in their store and they use a variety of means in directing you towards sales, products, audio announcements, and visuals (like K-Marts Basking Blue Beacon)

Chatting is not spam......it's chatting. Read the Group Charters people ;)

Oh yeah - to answer the OP on this -- like Damien said, group chat has been having this problem off and on for many months now. Take heart -- USUALLY, if our group chat is lagging and giving us these messages, the rest of SL is running fairly okay. When the group chat starts working really well, the rest of SL is usually major borked.

If you are using a Group Chat to promote your business or SIM, its in YOUR interest to control spammy conversations. Those people leaving because of the endless chit chat might have been interested in your promo messages.

Justify it all you want, point to the charters--customers are leaving, and you may wonder why you are left with an empty sim, and a small circle of people using your services for free.

SL seriously messed this up. Conversational multi-person group chat is another thing from Business-Consumer communications. But SL lumped it together. If I have a business, do I want all my customers to see and use my email list? No way.

Some day I hope for a way to actually close Group Chat. Using the little X has never done it for me, otherwise I wouldn't care about all that chatter. The groups I own are always quiet, but the rest of them like to explode into useless chatter for hours on end that have nothing to do with the group, and it's clearly stated - Do not chat in group chat. Therefore I do feel the members hold the right to tell them to shut up once or twice then leave it be.

But.. Thanks for the answer! =)

If the charter says that the group is not for chatting then members do have the right to tell them to STFU. However, what I find from one group I belong to that does not allow chatting -- all of the thousands of members saying STFU is just as bad as the initial chatting.

This can easily be fixed by adding another permissible action -- just like you can designate who can and cannot create notices, you should be able to designate which role(s) can do the group chatting.

Another thing that would help minimize some of the chatting is if LL would finally fix the problem with not everyone always receiving group notices. I have noticed in one of the groups I am in that someone will ask a question about a group notice and we then get 30 minutes of repeated comments saying "what notice - I did not get a notice".
