I'm looking at the Knowledge Base and getting the impression that lots of good material is being removed, and replaced with video tutorials, and with information that's particularly interesting to the particular employee working on it, rather than what would be useful to the company and the users.
Of course, I don't exactly monitor the Knowledgebase on a regular basis. Maybe I'm imagining things. I feel fairly sure there used to be at least a few words on how to use the gesture editor, but now there's just a link to a video tutorial. The content in video tutorials isn't searchable, and video tutorials aren't the only good way to teach.
Too bad it's password protected. If it wasn't you could get an automated system to monitor it for you.

Does it automatically log us in now? I used to have to login to see any articles but now it lets me go straight in.

From: Ciaran Laval Does it automatically log us in now? I used to have to login to see any articles but now it lets me go straight in. Are you sure you aren't still logged in? To be "not password protected" in my sense would mean that anyone can look at it, SL user or not, and to be maximally useful, it would need to be crawlable by search engines. What are others finding? It's looking to me like it may not be password protected any more. The folks working on the KB, if they want to delete sections for replacement by video tutorials, could copy the sections being deleted into the wiki. No reason to eliminate searchable info.

They removed the password protection some time ago. Repeatedly I managed to get in while being logged out.
Has there been an announcement to that account? I don't think so. But you wouldn't have expected one, would you?

I just went to the web site and logged myself out. I was still able to access the knowledge base.

From: Ricky Yates Has there been an announcement There might well have been. There's so much going on all the time it's hard to keep up. Even just with SL. Not being password protected is great. I wonder if it Googleable. That would be even better. Now if it just doesn't become nothing but links to video tutorials that would be even greater. Video killed the radio star. Let's hope it doesn't kill searchable text and static images in instructional material.

I know that they completely rearranged the content. Whether they actually deleted something, I wouldn't really notice, as I don't consult the KB very often.

They did open up the Knowledge Base so we can actually access it now, I can't find the blog posting atm, but there was one not too long ago... Why would they do videos for info? How silly is that? Can't skim for info, can't search, and worse, impossible to update when things change without redoing all the work! I don't know if they are removing info, since I never spent the time trying to get into the old one but simply came here (the best resource ) or the wiki...

The KB has had and still has tons of well presented information.
One reason to ADD video tutorials is that different folks learn best in different ways. Another reason is - they have an employee that feels like doing videos. It lets them talk and be a star. Another reason is - for conveying things about how to use a computer, something that shows the menus like they look in real life, with a mouse cursor moving like they really do, and dialog boxes popping up like they really do, etc., is not really such a bad way of showing someone how to do something on a computer.
