Hi,
I'm new to the SL forums, so I appologize if this is the wrong forum to post this in.
Anyway, I have a slight problem. In an effort to make some easy cash without having to get an actual job (In RL, I'm attending college - spending several hours per day on SL just wouldn't be intelligent), I decided to fill out some surveys. Despite making a "spammable" e-mail adress, I still provided all my real information, since the survey sites specifically say that users will be banned from their systems for providing falsified information, and ultimately will not be payed for filling out surveys. Somewhat reluctantly, I suppose, I provided all my information. I felt this wasn't the greatest of ideas, but I did it anyway since it seemed to be the easiest and most effective way of making money without making a real time committment to SL. Plus, I'd heard of other people doing the same thing who didn't seem to have encountered problems as a result.
Now, telemarketers are calling my cell phone. I can't exactly blame them, since they are getting payed to do just that - but I guess I didn't actually think they would call my cell phone. I just hope they aren't calling my parents back home. Either way, I figure I can't be the only one who has had this problem - or am I? I'm just curious as to whether anyone has had telemarketers call their cell phone, and if so, if there is any way to prevent this from continuing to happen without getting a new number.
- Rob

I think if you are in the USA you can sign your number into the do not call registry. https://www.donotcall.gov/But... having filled in those hippie pay forms I think they are considered an 'opt in' to have yourself called. I'd try the registry anyways and see if it stops the calls.

The hippie vendor(and all the other survey vendors) collect your information and sell it to telemarket agents. If you plan on making money in SL I would reccomend buying a prepaid cell-phone and simply dumping it.

The registry won't stop their calls since it was you who gave your number to them, or at least that's the way they see it. My suggestion is Change Your Number.... Never, Ever give out your personal info to ANY survey sites. Anyways, did you get your Lindens?

I absolutely can't understand how it is a workable business model to telemarket to people who have the least amount of money.

I found this on the donotcall website. So... you tell the telemarketer you do not want any calls from them and if they persist they will get fined. From: someone My number is on the National Do Not Call Registry. After I bought something from a company, a telemarketer representing that organization called me. Is this a violation?
No. By purchasing something from the company, you established a business relationship with the company. As a result, even if you put your number on the National Do Not Call Registry, that company may call you for up to 18 months after your last purchase or delivery from it, or your last payment to it, unless you ask the company not to call again. In that case, the company must honor your request not to call. If they subsequently call you again, they may be subject to a fine of up to $11,000.
An established business relationship with a company also will be created if you make an inquiry to the company, or submit an application to it. This kind of established business relationship exists for three months after the inquiry or application. During this time, the company can call you.
If you make a specific request to that company not to call you, however, then the company may not call you, even if you have an established business relationship with that company.

When I saw all the personal info these people wanted and many of the wanted credit card numbers too. I gave them 800-555-1212 as my phone number. 555 is a fake area most often seen in movies. You may have to get a new phone number. The email address I gave is a bit bucket for my website. The mail doesn't bounce, it just disappears into the world beyond RL.

Tell every marketer who calls not to call you again and to put your number on their do not call list. Don't even be remotely polite - just tell them that and hang up on them. It probably won't work.
This is such a good argument against ever doing these surveys for money. Wouldn't it just be better to put $25 on SL and play with whatever that gets you? Over 6k I think. 6k is plenty to get set up with some nice stuff and to go play.

Well I guess all the newbies (myself included) have to learn. I won't be "camping" or using any of these "ATM" machines. I signed up as Premium and I am waiting for the system to let me put some RL$ in the system.

Not sure about a cellphone, but to stop telemarketers on your home phone:
1) Setup an old PC with a 56k modem, or an old fax machine to your phone line. 2) When the telemarketer calls, tell them no, and ask them politely to take you off thier list. 3) If they do not say "Have a nice day." (or somethign simular) and hang up, then hit CONNECT, or SEND.
A little known fact is a good number of telemarketers use headsets. The noise from a fax or 56k modem is QUITE difinitve =^.^=

Never, Ever give out your personal info to ANY survey sites. Anyways, did you get your Lindens? But I don't understand - they say you must give out your real info or you will be banned. And I'm pretty sure that information can be checked, so I do believe that if I provide fake info, they can figure that out? Or maybe I'm wrong. I did get some money from it though, but I'm done with surveys. Second Life really just isn't that important to me. I'll continue to camp and put money into my savings bond and perhaps that'll add up to something if people are still playing this in 3-5 years, but other than that I'm done. No more surveys for me. I mean I knew it was a mistake, but like I said I didn't know they'd actually call me. I didn't expect anything more than e-mail.
