First thing to try is clearing your cache and restarting SL.

based on past experiences.
1) Clearing the cache, a Linden standard response, will most likely do two things....jack and s**t. (Almost guaranteed to do nothing)
2) It MAY magically reappear at some random future time in your lost and found folder, after they run whatever serverside DB cleanup they infrequently run every few months. (Unlikely)
3) You lost it, not going to get it back (The most likely outcome)
I hate to be a pessimist, but after nearly 4 years here and countless incidents like this, I have recovered ONE item via cache clearing (I knew it was there, as it was invisible but I could bump into it while moving) and had ONE return to my lost and found after 3+ months. The rest....gone forever.
Word of advice, unless your connection is solid, and the servers are perfectly stable, don't rez nocopy items. Weekends, it can be a crapshoot whether it rezzes or can be picked up. Right after updates and rolling restarts is a time to avoid rezzing irreplacable items as well.

From: Maklin Deckard 1) Clearing the cache, a Linden standard response, will most likely do two things....jack and s**t. (Almost guaranteed to do nothing). This is absolutely untrue, especially since the OP crashed while trying to take something into inventory. A cache clear and relog is the absolute best thing to do. Once you do that, open your Inventory, hit the Recent Items tab then minimize (not close) the inventory window for a while to let your inventory reload from the server. Check the top of the inventory window every once-in-a-while to see when it's done loading. If that doesn't find your object, a support ticket is about all you can do.

One time I rezzed a HUD on the floor, then crashed. When I came back I couldn't find it on the ground or in my inventory. I freaked out. Cache clearing didn't help. Incidently, I logged in with metabolt and did a scan for all objects in 15m and the HUD turned up on the list. Turns out it ended up rezzing underneath the floor! Since that day I've always rezzed a cube as a "table" to rez things on.

I lost a piling, or post, while I was moving it the other day and I spent about an hour looking for it. It was pretty big, too, hard to miss. I never did find it. It disappeared and is yet to reappear.

Untrue in my experiences: I agree with Meade. Clearing cache and doing a search has resulted in things coming back into view for me on numerous occasions.

Also you might try looking in your Lost and Found folder. Sometimes multiple items that you rez can get lumped together into a rubrics cube looking thing. If you see one of those icons in your Lost and Found, rez it and maybe your item is in there.

Then you and DaQ are the luckiest persons on the face of the earth if it regularly works for you! Doesn't work for me (has once in almost four years). I didn't tell the OP NOT to do it....sure clear the cache, why not, can't hurt...miracles do happen...I do it myself when losing things. However, in my experience the statement I made is perfectly true...cache clearing has been an utterly useless exercise, other than to tell CutNPasteAnswers Linden at support 'I already cleared the cache and restarted' on the ticket you open....which probably won't help either since they will still paste that in as their solution.

thx, Cale Oh I can so relate to how you feel on this one, happened to me, and I also have to agree with what Maklin said. Originally Posted by Maklin Deckard 1) Clearing the cache, a Linden standard response, will most likely do two things....jack and s**t. (Almost guaranteed to do nothing) I had lost a chim gosh almost a month ago. Had just bought about 2k worth of dances from Sine Wave. Had my chim out and editing it. Crashed hard, came back and it was gone as well as all the dances I had just bought. Cleared my cache and all before coming back on. Then I did the search, checked lost and found, even did the view transparent searched everything and everywhere. Never found it. Waited a few days hoping..nothing. So I replaced it as well as the dances. BIG mistake!! Lost that one also 2 days later...never got any help either. :/ Still waiting and hoping one day it will return..but I highly doubt it.

Maybe for you but clearing cache (maybe even 2x) has often restored items to my inventory. The other step is to clear cache and login to a different sim (mainland preferred). I usually pick Pooley.

From: MrCaleb Doobie ok, what the heck, yesterday I had an item out and was attempting to taking it back to my inventory then I crashed. This reminds me of one of my early SL traumas. I once crashed with about half a 1000-plus-prim castle selected. When I got back in-world, it wasn't there. But it wasn't gone: the selected objects were spread all over the sim. I spent days trying to find and retrieve all the scattered bits, and for months thereafter, stuff I missed would get returned to me when landowners realized I was hogging their prims. Nonetheless, I agree that the cache-clearing option is especially likely to work in this case, where the viewer's cached idea of Inventory is very likely out-of-sync with the Asset cluster's, because the object was en-route to Inventory when the crash occurred.

If you own the land, there is that land tab option where you can see all your prims. I've found prims hidden in walls, underground and in the sky before using it. I managed to locate a puny HUD that was little more than a speck once somewhere between my sky house and mainland.

And there is always the mysterious zone know as the zero point of any sim. I once knew of a gal who had a wandering house. The dratted thing kept leaving her sim to appear underwater at another sim's zero co-ordinate. Go figure.

Yes, 0,0,0 is a good place to search - lots of things show up there. You could also have your estate manager restart the sim, things sometimes appear there (or at 0,0,0).
And as someone else posted - sometimes it is just not where you though it was. I have found numerous chims, etc via the top scripts, or a prim finder - in locations other then the original location.

Darn, tried the clear cache relog trick and no luck. I'll try the 0, 0, 0 next, wish me luck!

I've only seen things show up at 0,0,0 when they fail partway through rezzing. Having something there usually means a ghost object where it should have gone, too. Looking there is probably easy enough to do anyway but I wouldn't be hopeful.
When you tried to pick up the object, did just your client crash or did the sim crash too?

If you are estate manager and can access the "Show Top Scripts", you can find a scripted item with the coordinates - and even return it.

Hmmm, 0, 0, 0 didn't help. So, I picked up an object finder HUD, did a search with that, and I'll be darned if it isn't telling me that said object is in the exact location that I had left it. But, I cannot see it or touch it. I tried the Ctrl-Alt-t to see if it was just invisible, and peered into the walls and floors with no luck. Now I'm really puzzled, is it there or not? Sindy, it was a crash as a result of my server, not the sim. Rhonda, I am the parcel owner, tell me more about the show top scripts please. Cale

Now I'm really puzzled, is it there or not? Yes and no. It sounds like it's ghosted. If you try to walk over that spot, does it seem like you're bumping into or walking over something? If so, it's sorta like the physics part of the sim thinks it's there but the rest of the sim doesn't. A sim restart usually clears this up. Probably won't get it back into your inventory, though. You should do a lost-inventory support ticket and give them the _exact_ name of the object. Say you've done the cache-clear/relog thing and that the object appears to still be there but ghosted. Also tell them the location of the ghost, as reported by the object finder thing. From: MrCaleb Doobie Sindy, it was a crash as a result of my server, not the sim. I'll take that to mean your PC. I asked because one of the few scenarios that they can't recover inventory on, last I heard, was when you try to rez an object and the sim crashes between the time the object appears and the time that the same saves off the simstate. That doesn't sound like this was the case.

Actually issues of disappearing items, usually do to crashing, are about the only time that I do clear my cache - and it has always fixed the problem
