OK, one was nominated that shouldn't even be considered, so do we have published standards or something? Optimally, of course, it should mention LL, camping bots, current hot topics (at least one) and that the original post actually not make sense on the first reading. The latter guarantees at least three responses - one sincere query and two snide remarks - to get it all launched.
Currently, something along the lines of "Is it true the new LL OS policy is just a cover-up for their lack of response to camping bots?", but with confusion, maybe run it through a nOOb or Newbie translator. One or the other. Or both.
Someone that is really good could easily bring up a really old touchy subject that everyone has forgotten about. This is best done by someone with a rez date before 2007, but you can always pretend that you are an alt for a really old av.
So my minimal standards for a duly anointed Friday thread is: 1) Confused title and initial post
and 2) three or more of the following (number up for discussion)
a) LL (preferably a new policy or action) b) current hot topic c) bots, preferably camping bots d) alts e) land sharks/extortionists f) a ridiculously trivial angle that will make most posters feel embarrassed to answer, but they will, oh yes they will, eventually.
I think we should have standards that we can use to ignore - how can you break them if you have none (see Stallion Haystack thread)?

From: Brenda Connolly Not even close. The best friday threads were those that came out of nowhere, by people without a posting history, usually ranting about some injustice they were the victim of or a soap box sermon denoting the evils of a given activity/fetish/ lifestyle in SL. They are usually meant to be serious discussions, at least in the mind of the OP. Jig's threads don't work as they may be annoying to some, the questions are usually well thought and somewhat interesting, the discussion gets heated at times, but the thread bever sinks to true Friday heights. A thread such as Stallion's doesn't qualify as it is an obvious plant. You can't intentionally make a true Friday thread, it just has to happen. This says it best - they just happen and there is not real rule, you just know them when they show up or turn into it.

No, no no. WAYYYY off base. There has to be some form of sexuality; either implyed, stated or simple inuendo.
Any thing else is extra.
Where can I find a chim to attach to my furry bits?
That would be on the low end of the scale, but a good start.

One of the funniest conversations I remember was an innocent newcomer wanting info on SL pregancies. Many of the readers and posters did not even know such a thing existed and therefore the conversation just exploded into inuendoes and such. ETA: Some of the best Friday threads result in the readers splitting their sides laughing, but without the OP actually intending to do so.

I guess that would have to come from some student at some university hitherto unknown to be a Friday starter. They could do a poll or questionnaire...

I always thought the first rule of Friday Threads was that they couldn't be intentional.
And for my money, the best friday threads included crazy inarticulate lawsuit threats in the opening post, or at least, on the first page.

LOL

From: Love Hastings Nice try, be we ain't falling for such a simple ploy. I know. Conceded as much. Hard to be more than simple this time on a Friday. Mostly thinking about going out to an Irish Pub, unusual in these parts for being run by people from Ireland. Anyone want to start a favorite pub thread instead? That I can talk about right now.

From: Ann Launay There are standards? Well..... I think it is a very very loose usage of that word.

From: Ann Launay There are standards? Low standards are still standards. Pep (The takeover of the female supremacy island from the "male slave" - gasp - owner has to be today's Friday thread; and it's still being taken seriously . . . )

-Atashi This is the truth. You can't "start" a Friday thread. Friday threads always start as serious posts. Usually they are complaining about some slight that has harmed the ego of the OP. The "English Nanny" who was upset that a vampire wouldn't talk to her or the land baron who was wanting to sue LL for some reason none of us could quite figure out were the classic Friday threads. /327/68/190732/1.html
