Good article. I've been saying for a long time we aught to do away with power grids. There should be a solar panel and/or a windmill on every single rooftop in the world. We should be installing piezo-electric generators underneath roadways, sidewalks, and floor tiles, everywhere. Instead of paying good money and expending fossil fuels to haul away our trash every week, we should be grinding it up and feeding it to bacteria in our septic tanks and sewers, to generate the methane that should be fueling our home furnaces. The list goes on and on and on.

There are so many untapped sources of 100% free energy all around us, it's ridiculous.

That scares me the thought of him and LL in charge of the worldwide power grid :)

I've got a cold fusion generator at the Egotherapy Centre and another one on my sky platform. Don't ask me how they work, they look a bit like greyish-green round-topped litter bins that sit in the corner humming away to themselves they give me all the power I need including the levitation system for my sky platform.

I can just imagine - just before all your power goes off a computer generated voice says - "You have been logged off the power grid for inactivity" :)

Or

You have been using more electricity than we anticipated - your unit price has just increased by 67%.

Did you ever stop and think ...

There is no such thing as perpetual motion. If we get energy from one source it has to come from somewhere. All those windmills going up are using the blowing wind and causing more drag on the Earth's rotation. If you are worried about effecting the climates with conventional power plants, think about the consequences from 72 hour long days. Global warming and global slowing. It's the end of days. Better stock up on iodine and ammunition before the bombs drop.

My bet is on hydrogen powered fuel cells and more nuke plants for electrical and hydrogen production.

Lindal's Resident Geek here...

I'm all for alternative energy...and I don't think that windmills are going to slow the earth's rotation by any significant amount. I would love to pave our roof with solar panels, and sell the power company whatever kilowatt-hours we're not using to run Lin's Second Life computer. But the alternative energy advocates often forget the economics.

The market tends to maximize profit. At present, it's much more profitable to generate power from hydro, coal, oil, and nuclear sources. Making solar panels is expensive, and so are wind farms...especially if you look at them in a dollars spent per kilowatt-hour generated way. In many cases, simply manufacturing them costs more in energy than they will ever return in service. All of these alternative energy solutions require big tax subsidies to even have a prayer of competing with the traditional methods.

Maybe you noticed the renewed interest in alternative energy when crude oil prices went through the roof? That was no mistake, that was economics at work, as the alternative sources suddenly looked more economically competitive.

Piezoelectric elements under the roads? That one sounds like perpetual motion to me...you'd be recovering a tiny fraction of the energy used to make the vehicles go over those roads. You'd probably save more in the long run by better streamlining. With any energy generation or distribution proposal the things to ask yourself are: Where is the energy coming from? Where is it going? What are the losses involved in generating, transforming, and transporting it? What is the overall cost per usable kilowatt-hour?

OK. Back to troubleshooting this computer. And trying to talk Lin into taking off her panties. ;)

Well, actually if you really think hard, the earth is about 25000 miles in circumference at the equator and turns once every 24 hours (assuming the earth isn't flat and revolves around the sun). This means that there must be a constant 1100 mph wind blowing at the equator which would be more than enough to supply all our energy needs.

This fact hasn't been exploited because the wind turbine manufacturers are all in on a conspiracy to keep their ancient sub-sonic windmills viable.
