The backup computer I am using right now only has 1 gb of memory - I recommend more than that even. When I look at processes, I consistently see the viewer using 750 mg.

So a Mac with 2G of RAM and a NVidia GForce card with 256 meg will be enough, ya think? (I'm shopping)

It needs Go-Faster stripes. But seriously... I ran SL on an Athlon XP 2400+ machine with 1gb RAM and an nvidia 5200 (256mb RAM) for ages. It wasn't blazing performance but it was good enough to get a load of building done, hang out and generally get the 'full monty' SL experience. Granted that was before Windlight, voice, etc... but you don't need a super-duper overpriced quad-core machine with a US$1000 grafix card. Any mid-range dual-core (or single core w/ hyperthreading) CPU should be fine. Avoid Celerons (or their AMD equivalents) or any dual-core CPU with less than 1mb cache ram.... They're gonna be slooooooooow. Generally nvidia cards seem to work best with SL. Anything from a 7300 on up should do fine. I used an ATI X1600 for a while and SL ran fine with it. I would strongly recommend getting more memory. Nowadays it's cheap as chips so there's no excuse not to have a minimum of 1gb. If you want / need to stick with your current Athlon system then upgrading your memory and grafix card would make a huge difference.

Aside from the computer, I strongly suspect the 512 DSL connection might be another bottleneck here...

P2 It meets minimum requirements...my ATI card isn't supported at all and it works fine. *shrug*

Hell, I have an X300 and with a Non Windlight viewer, it runs great. I do have 2.5 GB of RAM.
I'd be careful with those red computers. Studies have shown they do get more speeding tickets.

Based on a little personal experience, and a little bit of reading forums, it seems that Second Life and ATI video cards are not too compatible.
Whether the incompatibility is a problem with Second Life, or a problem with ATI, I don't know. (I suspect the problem is a little bit SL, and a little bit ATI, but I'm not an expert.)
If you were going to spend a few bucks to take a shot at making some sort of upgrade to run Second Life better, and were looking at your video card as a candidate for replacement, you're probably better off with nvidia than ATI. I don't know if an nvidia card is going to be better than ATI for every single application you run on your computer; but if you're only concern is Second Life, an nvidia card is your best bet.

Linden labs states that 512 is within-spec but experience tells me that it's not. I had a lot of problems until I upped my memory to 2 gig. After that, no more crashes. Find an internet service provider that can give you better than a 512k connection. I was struggling for a while on a poor ASDL line, now upgraded to 4 meg, and that for me has been the biggest reduction of lag. Graphics card would be your lowest priority here and it wouldn't be worth upgrading that until the other two issues are resolved first.

i have a 2200+ pushed up onto 333mhz frontside and under on the multiplier giving me 1.9 ghz and some change, 1 gb of pc3200 (ddr400) and a over-clocked geforce 6600GT, that ive been using for SL
with the current client i can push the graphics pretty high up there and as long as i dont zoom out too far i average 30 fps, which isnt stellar but decent enough
with non windlight clients the same machine was doing full detail, 128m draw distance @~75 fps

Not everyone's first language is English. Between the Babblefish grammar, ADSL, and the first name I think the OP's country is a little off the beaten path. Nothing wrong with that.
Anyway, if you can get the machine up to 1GB (1024MB) RAM that should improve speed noticeably. I would not recommend any other upgrade for now. ADSL is old technology and is going to be somewhat slow for SL no matter what else you try. That video card should be okay if you are using Windows XP?

In the meantime, go into Edit/Preferences/Graphics and set your quality to lowest. You can also click the Custom (I think; I'm not inworld) button and disable certain aspects. I would lower your Draw Distance to 64 m; this will prevent your computer from trying to download all the textures and shapes beyond that spatial limit, and will save you time/space both on your computer and your internet connection. Also turn off any streaming video and music (I can't remember which tab that is in Edit/Preferences.)
Also, try simplifying your own avatar to wearing fewer attachments, or at least attachments with less flex or scripts on them. For example, buy a hair that looks nice but doesn't move when you walk. Don't wear anything that has "bling," i.e. stuff that sparkles, like jewelry. This costs your computer (and everyone else's) worktime.
Good luck!
