Do you buy or make poses/animations?

Hi everyone,

I'm interested in getting a feel for how people generally get the poses and animations they want for SL. The sort of things I'm interested in knowing are:

- Do you prefer buying or making your own poses/animations? Why?
- How often do you make/buy?
- How much do you think you've spent on poses/animation?
- What do you look for in a good pose/animation? (Duration, quality, style, etc.)

If anyone wants to share their 2 cents, I'd appreciate it! Thanks! :)

If you are looking to sell animations, here is something you really really should do, and which almost nobody does: tell the user (a) the priority of the animation and (b) the length of the animation. These things are very, very useful to know whenever it comes to interacting with other animations, particularly the former.

Keep it consistent and sensible, as well. Don't make stands priority 4 for example.

Yes. (^_^) ... (<_<;) ... (>_>;) ... Oohkehey... Sometimes I like the ones I see for sale and sometimes I have an idea that I just MUST try out. (^_^)

Not very often... I'm lazy. (=_=)
From: someone

Counting my Sine Wave dances.... over $L4000 ($o$)

Depends. If it's a stand pose, I want a free neck/head and priority 3. If it's a dance, priority 4. I make my own sits because most bury me in the floor. And if it's a walk, plenty of wiggle. (^_^)y

Both. It would be helpful if you specified if you were interested in hearing from end users or those of us who build things like furniture that require animations.

I would guess that there are only a handful of people who "roll their own" for personal use. Larger market is for builders looking for full perms animations for use in furniture. I ended up doing a lot of my own furniture poses due to the lack of variety and my needs for custom poses for specific items.

I've spent easily 10-15k on full perms poses.

Thanks a lot for your replies so far!

Isablan, I am interested in hearing about both end users and people who build/sell. Your reply suggests that the most active buyers *and* creators of poses and animations are on the building/selling end, which is interesting.

Most people buy poses and animations in sets (think AO, dance systems, etc...) The people who tend to buy individual items are usually looking for something specific or something not found in the usual packaged systems. For example, if I'm creating a resort I would buy a ton of products that don't need full perms such as poolside anims. But your average SL buyer has a prefab house and buys furniture with poses included and has an AO with poses included. So, you need to really examine the two different markets and their needs.

have purchased in the past
as for how much I have spent, had to guess, being I consider dances and such in there as well

do I still buy, occasionally, only after exhausting the freebie packages for what I want

there are many many many free ones that are awesome, for me there is seldom the need to purchase them anymore

make my own, nope, have not tried, would not know where to start

I've made some of my own static poses to put in furniture. I've also purchased full perm poses and animations to use in items I sell, as well as using some of the better free ones.

As an end user I buy poses for my AO, good animated poses to have around my home/land from places like pillow talk, dances and couples dance balls, and naughty poseballs and scripted furniture...which are gathering dust.

I buy animations cause there is no way I will ever make them as well as the highly skilled do.
I would also pay for customizing animations for my avatar but most good animators are very busy folks!

As a content creator, I make all of my own animations, as there's no other way to get what I want with the kind of freedom of licensing that I want.

But for personal use in an AO for instance, I always buy from others who specialize in animations.

When I want good ones, I buy. When I just need a static pose, I'll usually give it a shot with qavimator, just because even that is easier than shopping for the just-right one you want.

Not too often any more. Haven't gotten anything lately. This could be because I'm doing more scripting than building..

Not counting things like beds & dance poles, maybe L$25k or so.

Depends a lot on what it's going to be used for. If it's just a sit/lie to plug into a couch, duration doesn't matter a ton. For naughty stuff, duration is better. Quality is always important.

I'm far more likely to spend L$1k on a full-perm animation than I am to buy a few copies at L$100. I _never_ give this out full perm but I do like to build various things and having full perm animations to put in my latest couch/pool floatie/hot air balloon/whatever is a lot more convenient for me.

at the risk of sounding like a big loser.....I buy all animations and scripts because i have no experience with either. I make my living in SL by operating 6 sims. But i do not have any skills in scripting, animations or poses or anything in that industry...I do however have great rspect for those who do these things! Where wuold we be without them? Whatever i spend on that stuff is worth every L$ in my opinion! Thanks to all Creators!!!

I used to do 3D animations years ago professionally. So I make my own obviously! ;)

I have been stopped and asked "where did your AO come from?" and then told to sell it enough times that now I do! :D

I agree 100% with the don't make your anims priority 4 (unless there's specific reason to), it's the reason I refuse to buy any of the dances from the popular maker previously mentioned, they break everything else!

Most of what I have done has been custom work, but as many have also noticed, it is lots of work, and I refuse to do "static" frozen poses that make AVs look like silly statues or anything else unnatural looking.

So I think I've answered all your questions even though I'm probably not your target market! ;)
