Real $3.1M mansion causes a virtual stir
Flipping through the real estate section is so yesterday -- touring an exact replica of a home for sale in Second Life is what's in store tomorrow.

I can't find it in SL ???

cool idea though.

Well, this was fascinating. The home in question is in Coldwell Banker's sim, Ranchero, predictably. The house is at 64, 134, 35. The area is laid out like a little district, so they could do this with quite a few homes. You TP in to face a kiosk with RL web page references and photo walkthroughs. (There is a TP directly from Coldwell's headquarters).

The model itself is done .. well, OK. It suffers chiefly from two things: in RL elite properties are elite because of location, location, particularly on Mercer Island, which is lovely. This model has no landscaping and doesn't seem to be particularly nicely sited. Also, in SL rooms have to be disproportionately large to accomodate camera slew ... when you mockup to RL room sizes, it seems cramped. But an interesting concept ... I think it has legs but I would do it a little differently to show the house more to advantage.

Thanks,

Good use of using a RL business in SL.
Good publicity as well if the house your trying to sell makes it on CNN.

For something like that, maybe mouselook would work best?

I hope the home was designed to fit 7FT tall Avatars, because people seem to like their height in SL :)

I've been saying this for ages; SL has so many serious applications that are not being used.

For example, say you are a local council planning to build a new office block. You tender for architects to submit their designs. They build models, you pick the one you like. Alternatively, you could get them to build in SL and then walk round the design itself. Much better.

Why aren't more things like this being done?

I Agree, but no one seems to have figured it out yet. If you think about it, its pretty hard to come up with a way for a RL business to use SL, ........so far anyways?

I've wondered this myself.

Even suggested it to people who build models in stuff like SoftImage XSI for home design.

Why show them just a plain ol' 3D house when you could have them walk through it, try it out?
