I have both Windows XP and Linux OpenSuse 11.1 installed on the same machine, and have various versions of the SL viewer on each.
At some point today, half my inventory vanished on the Windows installation, but is still there when I log in on Linux. I've tried clearing my cache on the Windows bit, logging into Aditi and so forth, but no luck..
Anyone got any suggestions for recovering the Windows stuff or any suggestions why this is happening? It's clearly still there on the server, but Windows can't see it, or retrieve it or something.
I'm contemplating uninstalling SL completely from the Windows partition and doing a completely clean re-install, but I'm a bit worried about making a bad situation worse.

tried the beta grid? but only if you've been in there in the last month since they did the refresh. If you haven't then it may only pull down all the stuff it can currently see. you can also try doing a search for zindra. I think I remember reading somewhere that searching for an item that is at the end of the alphabet will bring everything back.. but don't quote me on that one.. this is an apocryphal claim at best. I've got my fingers crossed

Thanks, folks.. I have indeed tried both clearing my cache and logging onto Aditi, as I believe the beta grid is now called, but same results.. the Windows viewer downloads the same number of items (about half what the Linux one does) and then doesn't stall.. it stops downloading, the hour glass vanishes, and no matter what I put in search, it doesn't do anything. It really is as if the Windows viewer thinks I've only got half the items the Linux viewer does. The folders are there but they're empty.
It's clearly a local problem, and local to a particular operating system on my machine. I can wear/rez stuff in LInux, log out, and then back in Windows, and it's there still. I guess one fix would be to box all my inventory in Linux and then unpack it in Windows, but that will be a hell of a job and one I want to avoid if I can.
As I said, I'm wondering if a completely clean Windows re-installation would do the trick, but I don't like doing anything drastic when in what are, to me, uncharted waters, for fear of making things worse, and I'm wondering if anyone who knows how viewers and inventory work can guide me. I've put in a support ticket and guess I should wait, but I just wondered.
ETA -- whoopie! After some very helpful advice from Perry Linden in Live Chat and a bit of research in the wiki I was able to resolve the problem by deleting c:\documents and settings\ username \Local Settings\Temp and C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\Application Data\Second Life as well as the cache and avatar_name folders from C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\SecondLife
All fixed.

Yup, a "clean reinstallation" of SL most often does the trick for me. However, on rare occasions I am down as much as 5k worth of inventory and NOTHING but waiting a few days restores it. At least I have learned not to panic too much when this happens.
Cheers, Nix
