There's the SLim thing - made a big fuss about it a few months back, but haven't heard anything at all lately... might be a dead project?

http://secondlife.com/SLim/

Haven't tried it, but there most certain IS an SL Messenger.

(Added - it DOES say that you need to create a separate account on that page, then log in with the regular viewer 1.22 or newer - and THEN you can fire up SLim - so make sure you've done all those things...)

SLim is a waste of time. It's a sidecar to the viewer. You have to be logged into SL with the viewer, and you have to have a voice account with a third-party provider (even if you're not using voice). AND you can only use SLim to exchange IMs with other people who have SLim.

It's useless in a very grand way.

This is a pet peeve of mine, since I've spent a lot of time on this very question myself.

What you *can* do is this:

You can use MetaBolt, SL Messenger, or similar programs IF you are not behind a firewall that blocks such programs.

You can use ajaxlife.net, although it often goes down without warning and is not always available.

You can send IMs inworld at zonkster.com.

You can have your IMs forwarded to your email account and you can reply (via email) within the space of a few hours.

Ahh. Nice. I never tried the SLim thing - I just knew it existed. Didn't really seem useful to me either. lol

I would imagine now that we have http-in working, there will be a slew of messenger apps coming down the pipeline from in-world creators. And I'm sure 90% of them will be unbearably annoying. lol

The only thing that was correct in this post was that you need an account with vivox. Everything else is false. Please do not spread these lies.

FYI - the server that hosts Ajaxlife has lots of ups and downs, so don't be surprised if you connection comes and goes.

Anyone know who the linden in charge of SLim is?

And a second note anyone know the dev of ajaxlife? Tried looking at the blog and stuff but seems not too coherent and abandoned.really intreted in getting someone to release some sort of sl messenger for android.....don't relly understand why LL doesn't dev a basic mobile cleint for simple text messanges to go back and forth on your freinds list and port it over to all the diffrent app markets...iphone....android...rim....etc. hell they would get 5 bucks from me for it.

And if you're behind a firewall that blocks SL, it blocks SLim as well. And if you're logged on twice, only the first session can use it.

Kathrine Berry is the Dev for Ajazlife, and doesn't seem to be active in her usual places on the web, so no telling if there is any work going on there or not... as far as SLim, good luck... even if there is a particular linden "in charge" of it, odds are they really know very little about it.

I got those "lies" off the SL webpage that explains how to use SLim. I've also downloaded it and attempted to use it.

Here is the source of what you call "lies":

https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=5615

Take it up with Linden Labs, sonny boy. Go straighten them out, call them on their lies: you're clearly better informed than they are.

(Next time, check your facts before you call someone a liar.)
