Lots of people this is happening to. From what i have learned, it sounds like one of your groups is taking out money for land and such. Check your groups and see which one is set for this

Lots of groups require there members to pay for the group to be in search. This is not unusual but 10L is a lot. It cost $30L to be in search and unless there is a lot of people in the group, you payed a large portion of it. Its best to check your transaction history (log into www.secondlife.com - top right hand corner is your name and just under that is a link called "account", click that. The on the left side of the screen (in a blue box) is a link called "transaction history", click that).

That will tell you who took the money.

good luck, Julie

:0 yes, beware of joining groups off the bat when joining second life. ;0 look under a group's info for 'land liabilities' or some such line to see if you will have to pay 'group dues' or something to be a member... this is a 'shared liability' for classified/search advertising that a lot of groups use to offset their costs. :\ if you're a part of group that has this liability, you can just 'leave group' or something like that...

something all newbies should look out for; this is probably #1 issue for all newbs... i wonder if there could be a warning popup built-in for joining a group with liabilities?? i guess it's a function that needs to be there 'just in case', but many 'group spammers' abuse the privilege without letting you know at all up-front that this will happen. :\ good luck and have fun with second life! :)

p.s. it's a good thing to frequently review what groups you are a member of, to assure that you aren't paying for any group fees like this... i think search/classified listings are mainly it for now. anyone know of other group fees to watch for?

The trouble is, this is "on" for all members by default and often the group owner doesn't realise the members are being charged until they receive complaints. For all group owners, this is something worth checking before you pay for a group ad.

I was about to make this point, it really should be only set to default for owners, maybe officers but it's about time it was removed as the default for everyone.

Yep.. Nothing like waking up in the Vegas sim and finding a ring on your finger..

Is there somebody else there that looks vaguely familiar?

i think you're right, that it's 'on' for anyone who creates a group. i do wish it would be turned off by default; at the same time, i can see how it's antithesis to those starting a group? so it may be a contentious issue... any case, joining any new group, you should review its 'group rules' and see if you'll get tagged for a fee.

mostly i just wish that upon joining any group with that line set, that it would warn you that you're going to be deducted extra fees on a regular basis. simple to add?? :\
