There could any number of reasons why. Very large numbers of avatars online at the time, dsl issues, griefers causing mayhem somewhere or gremlins in your pc. I usually just go do something else for a few minutes and try again. Only once did it take three tries before I could get on. You can also look in the Known Issues section and see if anything was there about login problems.
