Am I worng or it was promised that after conversions the performances would have been improved? I instead find that they have actually got worst , someone said me that now there are 5 or more islands on a same server for the light use sims instead of the previouse four is this true? is this the reason of the worst performances?

Sometime back I posted this question on another thread, and no one answered, but maybe there really is something to your question, Naiman: "Call me crazy, but in reviewing the Openspaces FAQ, it appears that the line for CPU ratios is now missing. Maybe someone here who knows these things can explain why that line was deleted from the FAQ?" |

I wouldn't put it past 'em. That would explain why LL was so concerned with people actually using the full capabilities of an OpenSpace...if they had plans to crowd more of them onto the existing servers.

The new homestead sims are the same thing as the old openspace sims but now with a hardcoded maximum of 20 avatars on them. If performance improves, it's because there are fewer of these types of sims (either homestead or new openspace) being abused now. Both products are 4 sims per CPU core, the same as the old openspace sims. With all sim host servers at LL now being 4 cores per server, that's 16 sims per server. Nothing new there.. _____________________

Serious question: Are you guessing, or is this in a FAQ or somewhere else? Script limits are going to be different for Homesteads, and yet you know the CPU usage will be the same? If that is so, why then did LL remove that detail from the FAQ on Opensims? |

They haven't announced anything different than what I said.
Script limits I didn't mention because LL hasn't really defined those yet. Or if they have, I haven't seen them talked about.. _____________________

Jack has said at a couple of his office hours that, right now, the sim-to-core ratio remains the same for both OpenSpaces and Homesteads, *but* that they are still considering reducing the number of Homesteads per core. (I get the sense that they'd have done it already if there were nothing 4-per-core hardcoded.) I suspect that this prospect of 3 instead of 4 Homesteads to a core is the most likely explanation for why those specifics aren't showing right now.
As for bad performance now: no telling who's sharing cores, and probably a lot of "musical chairs" with all the conversions, the building in future Blake Sea sims, and no telling what all else. |

The new homestead sims are the same thing as the old openspace sims but now with a hardcoded maximum of 20 avatars on them. This is the part that I'm most curious about. I rent an apartment on one of the sims that's going to be converted, and one of my favorite stores is there. Hope I can still get in when I like. |

I get the sense that they'd have done it already if there were nothing 4-per-core hardcoded. The 1.24.10 sim code was supposed to remove all the remaining hardcoded stuff, I think. _____________________

In all the time i have had my OS (since Mar/0
i have never had any lag whatsoever, about the time the conversions took place i began to notice lag,not a lot but some lag.Typical, they screw around with something and cause the very thing to claim they are fixing. So in my case they are charging more and giving slightly degraded performance,in all our cases i guess. |

Nikita, sl has been reclaiming hundreds of islands. This will leave cores with just one or two users. I have to think they are in the process of bunching the users back up again, so as to be able to take whole servers off line. This means you probobly have new core neighbers, one of which is a sim abuser in some way.
Sadly I noticed that Privateer finally poofed with the rest. I'm gonna miss that sim forever ![]() |

Just like many startups, it's best to burnish the bottom line so it looks good for a buyout investor.

So as I understand there are only rumors? some people are experiencing worst performances , but nothing official or more solid?

However SL performance generally has been less than stellar recently anywhere so perhaps this is the slow down that is being reported and not really anything to do with the OpenSpaces and Homesteads shuffle. |

Reading FJ's blog post (http://blog.secondlife.com/2009/01/12/second-life-grid-update-from-fj-linden/), I'm not sure whether to attribute that general slowdown to the central DB or the network. |
